In his new novel, Paulo Coelho, best-selling author of The Alchemist and Adultery, brings to life one of history's most enigmatic women: Mata Hari.
HER ONLY CRIME WAS TO BE AN INDEPENDENT WOMAN
When Mata Hari arrived in Paris she was penniless. Within months she was the most celebrated woman in the city.
As a dancer, she shocked and delighted audiences; as a courtesan, she bewitched the era’s richest and most powerful men.
But as paranoia consumed a country at war, Mata Hari’s lifestyle brought her under suspicion. In 1917, she was arrested in her hotel room on the Champs Elysees, and accused of espionage.
Told in Mata Hari’s voice through her final letter, The Spy is the unforgettable story of a woman who dared to defy convention and who paid the ultimate price.

A COMPELLING AND FASCINATING ACCOUNT OF MATA HARI!
By A Journey Without Map
“I am a woman who was born at the wrong time and nothing can be done to fix this. I don’t know if the future will remember me, but if it does, may it never see me as a victim, but as someone who moved forward with courage, fearlessly paying the price she had to pay.”
Unlike his last mediocre outing, Adultery, international bestselling author Paulo Coelho returns with a gripping tale of a character whose life is as enigmatic as her stage name Mata Hari. In The Spy, author Paulo Coelho tells the colourful story of Margaretha Geertruida "Margreet" MacLeod nee Zelle, who was a Dutch exotic dancer and courtesan. The book prologues with a scene at Cell 12 of Saint-Lazare prison in Paris in the early morning hours of October 15, 1917. It was the cell which lodged Mata Hari who was convicted of being a spy. She had appealed to the President of the Republic for clemency but it was turned down. From her prison cell she was taken to the Caserne de Vincennes barracks where a firing squad of 12 Zouaves waited. Without being blindfolded, as desired by her, Mata Hari was executed under charges of espionage for Germany.
In this compelling and hugely entertaining account of the life of Mata Hari, author Paulo Coelho spins a yarn that would fascinate and mesmerize readers and draw them into the story through a fictional letter written by Mata Hari to her lawyer Maitre Clunet in the week leading to her execution. The book takes a sharp and piercing look at the life, times and death of Mata Hari, showing different facets of her individuality and unique lifestyle. Unlike the vast majority women of her time, Mata Hari was unbending, purposeful and resolute.
What I like most about the book is the way Paulo Coelho treat his subject. He has painted a larger-than-life image of the dancer-courtesan following her to the place of her birth in a middle-class family, how she ended up without a penny, divorced and forlorn, and how in a change of fortune she became toast of the rich, famous and powerful in France in the early part of 20th century. The book also showcased her many lives, and how she was caught up in the crossfire of the war and ended up the way she did. The story is professedly “based on real events” but in author Paulo Coelho’s deft hands and creativity, it is difficult to guess how much is real and how much of the story is fiction. But all in all, this is a solid read you won’t want to miss!

An excellent novel which totally demolishes the Mata Hari myth and is firmly based on historical facts…
By Dimitrios
For many years I wanted to read a biography of Mata Hari, the legendary spy of World War I for whom I knew very few things – the usual oversimplifications and hyperboles of popular histories. Thankfully Paulo Coelho wrote this excellent novel which is based on a solid research of the historical sources and demolishes many of the myths that surround the historical person. Contrary to the popular beliefs and despite the title of the book, Mata Hari was not a spy after all, she didn’t deliver any worthy information to any of the warring sides and she didn’t affect any battle, much less she ever turned the tide of the war. She was arrested and executed in 1917 without any concrete evidence of her guilt apart from the fact that she once received money from a German agent and had sexual relationships with many important men of the French government – but that was just business as usual for her because she was nothing more than a well-paid whore of the Paris high society and she certainly didn’t care so much about the war. She only cared about her personal freedom, money, travels, expensive clothes and good life. Coelho doesn’t idolize her, he just presents her in all her faults, agonies, sadness, depression and vanity. Mata Hari was in fact a Dutch dancer and she could easily and safely have sat out the war in her country. The fact that she was finally trapped between the French and the Germans was due to her inner demons that consumed her. Her turbulent life is interwoven in this book with some fantastic little stories, allegories and eternal truths for which Coelho is famous. I especially liked the story of Eros and his bride near the end of the book, which reveals the true character of love and why it’s aptly called “blind”. So read this book, learn many things about the real (and not glorious at all) Mata Hari and enjoy master storyteller Coelho in another wonderful work of facts, emotions and parables.
