From Publishers Weekly
Immensely popular in Japan, the author's first novel to be published here is a comic combination of disparate styles: a mock-hardboiled mystery, a metaphysical speculation and an ironic first-person account of an impossible quest. The narrator is a modern Japanese yuppie: divorced, in a mildly exciting relationship and a much less exciting job as an ad copywriter, he lives unexceptionally until a photograph throws his life into chaos. The snapshot, which he uses to illustrate a newsletter, shows a field of sheep with one unique crossbreed, and the picture is special enough to have attracted the attention of both the nomadic friend who sent it to him and a right-wing Mr. Big who, moribund, wants the source found before he dies. The Boss's henchman, a sleek, scary majordomo, gives the narrator one month to track it down, and the story that ensues is a postmodern detective novel in which dreams, hallucinations and a wild imagination are more important than actual clues. With the help of a fluid, slangy translation, Murakami emerges as a wholly original talent. $30,000 ad/promo; Literary Guild and Doubleday Book Club alternates.

From Library Journal
This novel, the American debut of a popular contemporary Japanese writer, will have a familiar ring to Western ears. The narrative moves adroitly through mystery, fable, pensive realism, and modernist absurdity to tell the tale--at least on the surface--of a Japanese man caught up in a puzzling quest for a somewhat mystical sheep. The spare style echoes Raymond Carver, Dashiell Hammett, and Raymond Chandler, with matter-of-fact absurdities reminiscent of John Irving and, in less inspired moments, Tom Robbins. While the climax of the story is somewhat unrewarding, many readers will enjoy being pulled along by the playful and engaging style and fluid structure. Interesting as an example of current Japanese writing and as an unusually hip and irreverent look at contemporary Japanese society, this would be a nice addition to larger fiction collections.

Review
“Murakami is a mythmaker for the millennium, a wiseacre wiseman.” –New York Times Book Review

"A delight . . . equal parts screwball comedy, detective story, and heroic quest." –USA Today

“A witty adventure . . . a piece of verbal anarchy . . . a labyrinthine mystery from start to finish.” –San Francisco Chronicle

"Marvelously engaging, at turns witty, dry, wicked, even loopy. Reading A Wild Sheep Chase is like spending a splendidly foul weekend with the Four Raymonds–Chandler, Carver, Massey, and Queneau."–Frederick Barthelme

I have always been disappointed with his endings
By Monso
Ah, this is the book where he loses me as a fan. Understand I read his work in both English and Japanese. I have always been disappointed with his endings, but the path there would be so delightful I would pick up another book before long. This one, however, seems lackluster. His metaphors are dusty and thin, and he is displaying a lot of repetition of character specifics. Perhaps I am only now realizing that each book is the same with different dressing. However, this one didn't seem to be a work of love. I don't want to call it lazy, but it feels like one giant sigh. Like how translators use software that tracks and assimilates all their translated work, to reassemble their previous bits quickly when they need facilitating a new project. That way experienced translators don't have to do as much work on new projects - the software fills out a lot of the "new" work for them, using snips and slices of previously translated sentences. And so the book is written. Sigh. *carriage return* Siiiiiiigh...

But compared to the great Shūsaku Endō
By Amazon Customer
When you try hard make sure your reader know how intellectual you are . . . well, not my thing :). It reminded me of the feel of writers in Rome around 400 AD. Lacks emotion, passion, or purpose. Relationships are similar to getting enough water in the day. As always, I find gems in most everything I read. But compared to the great Shūsaku Endō, this book was very disappointing.

I loved the idea, the plot, but the relational void left me unsatisfied. How one finishes is so powerful. Like Umberto Eco's, The name of the Rose, the ending was flat. Hope and desire need to hold hands. Too bad such a talented writer didn't show this, except for one great "angry" scene.

I can't judge this author by one book, but I lost interest in investing any more time. Robert Jordon and Brandon Sanderson mixed with a Brene' Brown and an could old English chaps are a few of the writers that gets my attention these days.

Love people, and use things (read)!

Murakami building
By tomh
I have now read more than half of Murakami's novels (at least those translated to English). I am beyond entranced and Wild Sheep Chase is certainly a great moment in his writing where it is clear that his voice, themes, and wonderful quirks flow easily and effortlessly. What a great delight!

I had been reading "backwards" in time (which seems, in saying so very much a thing Murakami would appreciate). Then, I started reading mainly from his first works forward. It is clear that his voice and style has grown more confident and pure over time. So in Wild Sheep Chase, which is neither his first nor more recent work, it is simply brilliant to see his artistry in a nearly fully honed yet still raw state. All of the elements are present. All of the wonderful prose and beautiful contrast of depth, subtlety, nuance and brash modernity are here.

Our hero is imperfect and conflicted. He is faced with a bizarre and absurd choice, taking the wrong option for all the worst (but very human) reasons. He finds himself engulfed in a world that seems similar and parallel, but is clearly not part of reality. Murakami employs no convenient devices to make this seem plausible; on the contrary woos us with mysticism entwined with humor and a wry wink, a nearly constant aside, to the reader. The plot is known from nearly the start, and the outcome is a mystery to ... or perhaps beyond ... the end. Joy!

If you're reading his (still forming) opus in order, you'll see a bit of a jolt in this work -- a moment where it becomes clear that the author has found all the bits that will make his other novels great. I haven't read them all yet, but it will not be long before I do. This is a moment of Murakami building, and it is stunning, both in itself as a great novel, and as well a brilliant flash of what is yet to come.
