An Intelligent Survey of Approaches and Techniques - But Not Very Hands-On

'Sonic Art' is more of a studio guide that lays out the territory of commonly-accepted tools, techniques, and approaches to electroacoustic composition rather than a hands-on tutorial. The ideal reader is already well-versed through listening, has an appreciation of the esthetic issues, and is self-motivated to seek out tools (in this case, largely software-based) and to devise their own working methods.
To be clear, this is not a book about electronic dance music in its myriad genres nor 'popular' ambient genres. The book is geared more towards the experimental side of contemporary classical music, combining extended acoustic instrumental (and vocal) techniques with the generation and manipulation of (largely) digital sound materials. It's a huge ocean of possibilities that can defy easy categorization.
There's a large chapter of well-written thumbnail sketches of representative repertoire works, but no accompanying recording or web site. The assumption is these are works that illustrate electroacoustic 'common practice' (skewing mostly from the 1970's-2000s) that should fascinate and inspire anyone following such a path - and they should be part of your listening library.
'Sonic Art' is intelligently written with plenty of interesting detail for practicing musicians as well as perceptive, technically-minded listeners. There's a clear (but not overpowering) academic bent - including material for students submitting works as part of applying to formal academic study programs.
'Sonic Art' makes a fine companion to Curtis Roads' recent 'Composing Electronic Music' - Roads' book includes a web site with a large number of excerpts he addresses in the text. Between the two books, much of the theoretical, practical, and esthetic terrain is covered - the rest, as they say, is up to you.
These books won't teach you specifically how to put pieces together. What they try and reveal is how other composers went about it - and it's likely you'll see part of your own creative efforts in their experiences and be inspired to press on.
