Excerpt: ...go first!" Frank's face paled. "Jehoshaphat!" he exclaimed to Henry who, realizing that something mysterious was taking place beneath the river, was bending close. "Jehoshaphat! They're in danger! Say, what can it be? Maybe they're caught in quicksand or a current or under a boat." Pleadingly, with fright and worry expressed in his tones, Frank begged Tom to reply, to tell him what was wrong, what the danger was. For a space he waited anxiously for his chum's reply and then, at last, it came. "It's all right," called Tom. "Don't worry. Stop talking and just listen!" Frank turned to Henry and disconnected the microphone by throwing off a switch to make sure that no sound could be sent. "I guess they're all right," he said. "But I'm worried just the same. Why should he want me to be quiet and just listen. Oh, I do wish they'd come back." "There's those foreign words again," he announced presently, "and, say-I didn't think of it before-there are two talking now." Then followed silence, not a sound, not even a hum or buzz of interference greeted his ears and anxiously he listened, half fearful that some awful casualty had happened to Tom and Rawlins out there somewhere under the turbid waters of the river. The moments passed terribly slowly to the two boys and then Frank again gave a start as he heard Tom ejaculate "Gosh!" followed by some rapid low-spoken words, only one of which Frank could catch-the word "wreck." "That's it," he announced to Henry with a sigh of relief. "They've found a wreck. Gee! perhaps they've found treasure." Henry laughed gayly. "Oh, that's good!" he exclaimed. "Treasure in the East River! You must think you're down in the West Indies or somewhere." "Well, I don't see what's so awful funny about finding a wreck or treasure in the East River," declared Frank petulantly. "Lots of boats have sunk here and why shouldn't one of...

Radio Adventure circa 1920
By Robert A. Voss
This is a series of four books by Verrill. He wrote over 115 books during his career and these are the ones with some 'radio' in them. It seems that 3 of these were just put on line this April of 2013, which I why I never found them before!

Tom and Frank are youngsters in the 1922 time frame. Tom builds his first receiving set - a crystal set, then quickly graduates to a tube receiver set. He has a friend, Frank, and they are both very enthusiastic radio buffs. Broadcasting has started, but all the stations are on 360 meters - the ONE frequency allocated for 'entertainment'. Nearly all other communications is 'cw'. Then he progresses to a 'single knob' tuner - 3 tuned circuits ganged together in a TRF set.. (this is long before the era of the superhet which didn't come out till '25 or '26. The boys find 'mysterious messages' being sent among all the others.

Tom's father is a government employee - Secret Service - and has to travel to Cuba. The boys manage to receive messages from the ship and hear that it has arrived in Cuba. Apparently, there is a rum smuggling operation they are trying to find and stop - but without success. It's a large racket but they have been unable to crack it. It could be the mysterious communications have to do with that.

The two boys - Tom and Frank - overhear a suspicious message nearby that seems to refer to Tom's father arriving in Cuba. The boys build a 'loop' antenna and they can now determine the direction from which a signal is arriving. They talk another friend into setting up a 'loop station' so they can triangulate the source of the mystery signal.

The messages come, a few a week, and the boys note every message starts off with a 'flower'. The messages don't seem to make sense, and they have never heard the other side of the messages, just the one side which seems to be originating somewhere in the lower Manhattan area (where most of the radio detectives live).

The story then gets into diving with self contained breathing apparatus into the East River - and submarines - and underwater radio - and all sorts of other intrigue. This 1922 era - all of this stuff is 'new' and some of it - well, imagined more than reality - but , heck, that is what is fun about reading the older stuff. They manage to find the HQ of the gang but miss getting the submarine they are using for smuggling. The Secret Service gets involved. They find the mystery wireless station, and learn from the captives of a really sinister plot against the US, one that would inflict major damage.

Shortly thereafter they find the submarine abandoned 100 miles off the coast - but it reveals nothing new.

Now they need to come up with a way to capture the kingpin of the operation and all the ill gotten loot - millions - that the gang has collected. They head off to the Caribbean - but you need to read the next book to find out what happens next. You'll just have to buy the next book to find out what happens!

It's a couple hour read. And the best of the 4 books to read. There is less and less radio as time goes by.

Four books in the series and all on line.

Radios and diving
By Lise Kosewahr
this is most suited for young boys if they can tear themselves away from their computers.I recall crystal radio sets and the old steamradios. And have also dived in lakes and rivers. The plot in the end was a bit of the american dream
