A great book to keep the minds of kids simulated over the summer...

I got this workbook for my little brother to use over the summer. He spends a lot of time with me throughout the week and during the summer time and I don’t want him just lounging around, watching tv or just playing video games all day because he, like most children, forget a lot of what they’ve learned during the school year over summer vacation if they aren't doing things that are productive and keep their minds engaged. He is on his way to third grade and I felt this workbook would be perfect for him to keep his memory refreshed even though it is a little below his grade level because I know that math is a subject he struggles with.
When the book arrived I was excited for him to get started because the book seemed to have so much information in it. But there is also a lot of photos so in it to keep his interest so he isn’t just bored with looking at a bunch of numbers. The back of the book includes all of the answers. The one thing I like about there being an answer key is that the children can check and verify if they did or did not get the answer correct. What I don’t love about the answer key being in the back of the book is that the pages aren’t perforated so it makes it harder to just tear them out because when kids know that the answers are in the back they will most certainly try to cheat even if they already know the answers. I also don’t like the fact that answers aren’t solely on their own pages. They’re attached to actual pages that the kids have to answer questions on which again will increase there chances of wanting to look at the answers or cheat.
I really love the fact that this workbook has different levels of difficulty. There is things that are super easy and don’t require much thought but there are also some that are a little more challenging and makes them have to think a little more. I also like that the book is separated into chapters and each of the chapter pages the kids can color if they’d like. This workbook includes counting, addition, subtraction, place value/sorting/number sense, counting money, time, measurements, geometry and two practice tests. This workbook has over 100 pages so there is more than plenty for the child to work on. This book is a little easy for my brother but it doesn’t really matter much because he is still refreshing his memory and keeping his brain active and that is what’s most important.

A good math workbook for first grade to reinforce skills or remediate where extra help is needed

My wife and I are both teachers and have three children ages 8. 6. and 2. Our 6 year old son is going into first grade next school year and we were happy to get this book in exchange for a review to help him prepare for next school year. Being in education for more than 15 years, my wife and I have noticed that much of the good work that teachers and students do during the school year can be undone during a summer. When skills are not reinforced during the summer months, they tend to be temporarily forgotten which results in the teacher (and student) having to do extra review work at the beginning of the school year to bring back all those previously taught skills. We do our best as parents to help our children keep up with their language arts and math skills during the summer months as much as we can. This math workbook does a good job to help our soon-to-be first grader prepare for the next level of math he will need.
The workbook is a nice one that starts with basic skills like counting, addition, and subtraction, and goes into place value, counting money, time, measurements and geometry (basic shapes). The material starts out simple and gets progressively more difficult as the book goes on. The material includes a lot of pictorial representations to help children understand. Unfortunately many students struggle with math and start to take on the attitude "I'm not good at math" and "I just can't do math." This is unfortunate as in many states passing state tests in math, including end-of-course exams in subjects like Algebra is a graduation requirement. We try to install a growth mindset in our own children that they can do math, even if they have to work at it and practice. This workbook helps them to feel successful by building up their skills from basic to more complex as the book goes on. A highly recommended math workbook for any child who is going into first grade or is in first grade and needs reinforcement.

Useful for himeschooling students/parents

This has all the subject that are covered in first grade math and is a great additive for extra curriculum. I home school my oldest who is going into first grade and it's perfect for quick seat work on top of his usual curriculum. It's very helpful to have the parent answer key in the back for any uncertainties that parents may have. It's also great if you need a review before going into 2nd grade as well to give your child a review so they don't loose any previous knowledge. Summer is the worst time for children to loose most of what they learn. We home school throughout the year so he never forgets what is taught. I personally like this work book and plan to find it in phonics and reading. It would be helpful to have as a back up for his curriculum we use already. I can add it in on days he just needs light seat work and we can go about the day knowing we got it in with minimum stress!
