Breathing Grace: What You Need More Than Your Next Breath, by Harry Kraus

Each week thousands of Christians will sing "Amazing Grace" at church, paying lip service to one of the most phenomenal aspects of Christianity, yet walking away untouched by its magnitude. They pay mental assent to the concept, but their hearts are untouched.

In the author's words, "God's grace is amazing, abundant, free, and available. So why is spiritual famine an epidemic both inside and outside the church? Because although we've come to Christ by recognizing grace, few of us have carried it along as essential equipment on the Christian path. . . . God never promised a pain-free life, but he did promise that his grace is all we need in our search for peace and fulfillment."

Breathing Grace is a unique look at a topic that stands at the very core of the Christian faith. Dr. Harry Kraus, best-selling author and practicing surgeon, reveals the gospel of grace through a series of medical metaphors, predominantly the physiology of our need for and utilization of oxygen. The clinical flavor of the book brings to life a subject that many Christians have failed to grasp and incorporate into their daily lives, illustrating our need, God's provision, and the moment-by-moment inflow and exhalation of grace to a starving world.

Breathing Grace includes study questions for group and individual use.

Review
"My friend Harry Kraus is an accomplished surgeon and novelist. Now in Breathing Grace, he proves himself an insightful spiritual guide, using medical analogies to illustrate great truths. Harry's heart for God and for people spills over on each page."
Randy Alcorn
Author of Heaven, Safely Home, and Deception

"There is no shortage of books on divine grace, but this one is different. Kraus has resorted to a medical metaphor, which he uses especially well in an era when the public is obsessed with health and medicine. But the real lack is spiritual maintenance, which in this presentation is laid out in an interesting and exciting fashion. Thrilling case histories, both medical and spiritual, abound. The human body can go three weeks without food, three days without water, three minutes without oxygen, but spiritual need requires minute by minute dosing, and grace is the remedy. This is not merely a 'how to' book but conveys a simple and satisfying way of life."
C. Everett Koop
M.D., former Surgeon General of the United States

"With a physician’s skill, my favorite Christian fiction writer dissects the truths of grace with compelling medical analogies. Breathing Grace is soul surgery that will transform your life as it probes the core of your relationship with God."
David Stevens
M.D., M.A. (Ethics), Executive Director, Christian Medical Society

"Kraus combines creative imagination, professional and clinical perspectives, and cross-cultural insights from his work in Africa with the Scriptures as the word of grace and does so out of his own genuine commitment to Christ. The uniting thread that runs through the book is the emphasis that knowing Jesus in grace makes a radical difference in the way we live and relate to others. Through this work the reader will be enriched in spirit and in faith."

Breathing Grace
By Barbara Borntrager
Combining riveting, everyday occurrences as a surgeon along wtih scripture, Harry Kraus shows the difference between living moment by moment by grace as opposed to relying on ourselves. For those of us who struggle with self worth, the simple, yet profound truth is that we forget to breathe in God's acceptance for daily living and end up choking on our inadequacies. It happens all the time--we begin the day with a pure heart eager to honor our Lord. Then throughout the day we become anxious, angry, resentful, insecure, suspicious of another, trying to look better than we really are--we're losing life, in need of grace and not even aware of our need for spiritual resuscitation. As I read this book, I find myself breathing deeply of God's love, moving me from worthless to worthy, and finding new freedom to breathe grace out to others. This is a book I'll pick up again and again.

AAHHHHHH!!!
By Deborah Howard
Breathing Grace is one book-long metaphor -- refreshing and satisfying as a deep breath of crisp, clear mountain air. Dr. Kraus has delivered a fresh look at the life-giving and life-sustaining qualities of the grace of God.

He begins each chapter with a medical story. His formula is to take these physiological illustrations and apply them to our spiritual life. The continuing theme of his book is that grace is to our very soul what oxygen is to every cell of our body. He does this with the gracefulness of a dancer and the mastery of a poet. Every chapter is written in an easy-going style, like he's sitting across the dining table dazzling us with the conviction of this assertion.

Breathing Grace is chock full of scripture, which effectively supports his arguments throughout the book. And while the chapters are practical and relevant, they challenge us to strive for deeper awareness of God's spectacular grace to His children.

Having a medical background, I found the medical illustration to spiritual application seamless and beautifully thought out. His explanations of complex physiology are clear and concise but may be too much for non-medical types who want an easier read. However, I urge you to push through it because the point he's coming to is completely worth your concentration through the medical passages. I believe you will find his stories fascinating and intriguing on their own. Dr. Kraus repeatedly reveals his heart to the reader and endears himself to us in the process. More importantly, he points us to Christ, reminding us of His sovereignty, justice and love. Without lecturing, Dr. Kraus pleads with us to wake up to the glories of God's grace.

Near the end of the book, he writes, "Take a breath and realize that you didn't deserve it. Every moment is a gift. And every moment we can function as a steward of that gift. So go ahead. Breathe in. That's God's grace. Now exhale grace on a dying world." Read this book. It will resuscitate your appreciation of God's grace - and every breath you take.

Refreshing message about grace
By Sonya O. Mounts
Dr. Harry Kraus uses a medical model to explain grace. I have this on CD and have listened to it several times. As Christians, we don't have to earn God's favor, we already have it and we can live fully with gratitude to Christ for his sacrifice for us. The book is really a beautiful reminder that we don't have to have this heaviness over our shoulders, will I be good enough, do enough, etc.--Jesus paid the debt for our sin and our motivation for service is not out of fear, but out of love.

Almost Interesting, by David Spade

A hilarious and biting memoir from the actor, comedian and Saturday Night Live alumni David Spade.

David Spade is best known for his harsh “Hollywood” Minute Sketches on SNL, his starring roles in movies like Joe Dirt and Tommy Boy,  and his seven-year stint as Dennis Finch on the series Just Shoot Me. Now, with a wit as dry as the weather in his home state of Arizona, the “comic brat extraordinaire” tells his story in Almost Interesting.

First Taking fans back to his childhood as a wannabe cool younger brother and recounting his excruciating road-tour to fame—when he was regularly mistaken for a ten year-old, Spade then dishes about his time crisscrossing the country as a comedian, for low-paying gigs and dragging along his mother’s old suitcase full of props. He also covers his years on SNL during the beloved Rock/Sandler/Farley era of the 1990s, including his close working relationship and friendship with Chris Farley and brags about the ridiculous perks that fame has brought into his life, including the constant fear of being fired, a crazy ex-assistant who attacked him while he was sleeping, a run-in with Eddie Murphy on the mean streets of Beverly Hills, and of course an endless supply of hot chicks.

Sometimes dirty, always funny, and as sharp as a tack, Almost Interesting reminds you why David Spade is one of our generation’s favorite funny guys.

David Spade is Almost Interesting

This is my memoir . . . . It’s me telling you about my fake problems in life and a few real ones. It’s a book about comedy, and how I came up from the dusty roads of Arizona with my OP shorts and my blond fluffy hair, to the mean streets of Beverly Hills, with nothing but a few props in my mom’s old honeymoon suitcase and a couple of dry jokes.

These are the stories I tell my friends at dinner when I’m drunk, and they dart their eyes around hoping a waiter will interrupt me.

Me blabbering on about how I lost my virginity, how I got into stand-up, meeting Johnny Carson, making Tommy Boy with Farlz, and getting beat up while wearing a Coneheads T-shirt. Sound stupid? Maybe! Read and find out.

Good read despite an unwelcome left turn.
By Pen Name
This was a funny and casually well-written book, a good read But it's a little frustrating because it abandons the "narrative," if you will, without finishing it. The first 2/3 of the book deal with Spade's upbringing, his grind through the comedy club scene, and his slow climb from SNL writer to SNL performer. Even though it's written with a light touch, that stuff is all pretty compelling. But it drops that thread after he's made it as an SNL cast member. It doesn't tell the story of what prompted him to leave SNL, or his movie career (except for Tommy Boy), or his experience on sitcoms. Instead, the last 1/3 of the book morphs into more of a George Carlin "Brain Droppings" type thing -- little observational essays on miscellaneous topics ranging from doing cocaine to his thoughts on dating tricks that women pull. I would have been really interested to hear why he made the jump from SNL when he did (given how hard his climb there was) and whether he's happy or not with his sitcom and movie work. The guy writes so well and so honestly about his career that I certainly could have read a lot more of it. But still, this is an entertaining read and I'd recommend it for anyone who likes a fun, self-aware memoir.

but I love David Spade
By KatComputer
but I love David Spade. Love that he's acerbic, love that he seems somewhat shy but he's really inside his head thinking 'What the hell?' all the time...love that he is like the younger brother that constantly looks out for everyone even though everyone is older and should know better...
This isn't a show-stopper book. That doesn't seem to be his style. This is a nice read, about a nice boy, that made it thru some rough stuff, and now his life is nice again. Kudos to your life, David Spade!

Weak sauce
By J. D. Piatt
I really enjoyed Spade on SNL, so this was a must have book.
He was there when it was really hopping and firing on all cylinders.
The book is mildly interesting on his early years, and how he really struggled to make it to SNL.
The portions about when he was actually on the show are the best. He could have probably made an entire book about THAT.
Instead, he glosses over a lot of what would seem to be a gold mine of behind the scenes information, then abruptly stops, and basically limps to the end.
I admit I didn't follow his career after SNL, so maybe it wasn't that interesting to HIM either.
I'm giving him a "C", and that's generous.
Not worth the money.
Sorry, David

The Tattoo History Source Book, by Steve Gilbert

The Tattoo History Source Book is an exhaustingly thorough, lavishly illustrated collection of historical records of tattooing throughout the world, from ancient times to the present. Collected together in one place, for the first time, are texts by explorers, journalists, physicians, psychiatrists, anthropologists, scholars, novelists, criminologists, and tattoo artists.

A brief essay by Gilbert sets each chapter in an historical context. Topics covered include the first written records of tattooing by Greek and Roman authors; the dispersal of tattoo designs and techniques throughout Polynesia; the discovery of Polynesian tattooing by European explorers; Japanese tattooing; the first 19th-century European and American tattoo artists; tattooed British royalty; the invention of the tattooing machine; and tattooing in the circus.

The anthology concludes with essays by four prominent contemporary tattoo artists: Tricia Allen, Chuck Eldridge, Lyle Tuttle, and Don Ed Hardy. The references at the end of each section will provide an introduction to the extensive literature that has been inspired by the ancient-but-neglected art of tattooing. Because of its broad historical context, The Tattoo History Source Book will be of interest to the general reader as well as art historians, tattoo fans, neurasthenics, hebephrenics, and cyclothemics.

From Library Journal
Body piercing and tattooing have seen a resurgence in America in the last decade. Sometimes referred to as an aspect of the "new tribalism," body arts harkens to practices usually associated with so-called primitive societies. Medical illustrator, writer, and part-time tattoo artist Gilbert seeks to explore the historical depth and aesthetic variations of tattoos as permanent body decoration. The text consists mostly of excerpts from the works of anthropologists, explorers, physicians, artists, and others and dates from Greek and Roman times to the present. The organization can be confusing, but Gilbert provides contextual essays for individual chapters, which are arranged primarily geographically, with the deepest coverage on Oceania, Japan, and Europe/America. The illustrations, ranging from crude line drawings to full-color photos, are perhaps the most fascinating element in the book. Unlike some books on tattooing, the images do not emphasize the salacious. While the text is not academic in tone, Gilbert supports his research with an extensive reference citation list and bibliography. Capable of entertaining and enlightening both young enthusiasts and anthropologists, this is recommended for both public and academic libraries. Eugene C. Burt, Seattle

The book I would have written!
By Jay
As a sociologist with strong anthropological interests turned tattoo apprentice, this is exactly the book I was looking for! Much of the tattoo world only goes back a century for its history, then alludes to ancient cultures. Just by flipping through this book upon arrival I can see that this is not the case with this book.

If there was ever a college class on the history of tattoos, this should be one of the required texts. The only thing that could make this better is if the book was actually divided into a series focusing on each area/timeframe and included more information. *hint hint*

Lots of history, a little dull.
By D. Stephens
You know, I guess I was just looking for a little more current history. Most of what you'll find in this book deals with ancient tribal and oriental histories. It's kind of like that college history class we all took dealing with ancient civilizations. Tough to find relationships to today's world (for me at least). Not a knock on the book itself, it is what it is, just my $.02.

Great Art Historical Survey of Tattoo
By Yeti
I had been struggling to find a book which would provide both images of the beauty of historical tattooing but also give the insights and historical context for the art. This book is amazing. Gilbert uses many historical excerpts from early explorers and early tattoo artists which make for an informative and interesting read. I highly, highly recommend this book.
