Want to know Steinbeck? Start here!

For my doctoral research, which involves the history of coastal California, I wanted one big, clearly written book that was solidly put together but not clogged with footnotes. I found it here. Fifteen years of research, some of it with friends and relatives of Steinbeck's, went into this biography, which reads like a straight-up narrative of the writer's adventurous life. Though long, it reads quickly, devoid of academic jargon. Highly recommended.

An epic, entertaining biography

John Steinbeck once considered writing an autobiography, and it's a shame the Nobel prize winner never lived to do it. Mr. Steinbeck's letters and journals blaze with sharp and honest introspection, keen insight into human behavior and empathy. It's certain that an autobiography would have been a classic.
So, instead, we rely on those who write biographies to chronicle the life of one of America's great writers.
There have been several Steinbeck biographies and many of those have been well done. But Jackson J. Benson's version, titled simply "John Steinbeck, Writer", is the definitive one - over 1,000 pages of readable and compelling material that follows the writer's life from his Huck Finn childhood in Salinas, California, to the success of his novels and the failures of his marriages in midlife, and finally to domestic bliss mixed with pain from pretentious critics whose stones and arrows he could not duck and would not ignore in his later years.
The ability to wrestle the massive amount of research that this work involved into a book that anyone can enjoy is an achievement that amazes.
It's the next best thing to the autobiography that never was.

Not quite 5-stars, but very, very good...

Frankly, it just got a little long for me. Steinbeck was---and probably still is---my favorite American writer. This book reminded me why: Not only for the beauty of his prose and amazing powers of description, but for his uncompromising integrity, loyalty and devotion to his craft. I learned a lot about this man, but also about the book publishing business and the literary world.
One has to tip his hat to the author for the level of detail and the research performed, especially his good fortune in being able to interview all three of his wives. Reading this after reading most of Steinbeck's major works, gave insight into what drove JS to write each one of his works and helped dispel any misconceptions about his political tendencies and whether he was trying to write "political message" books or not.
Most appalling was to find out how little regarded Steinbeck was among the literary critics in the last 25-30 years of his life, to the point that they questioned the Nobel Prize Committee's decision-making process once JS was honored with the award.
There is a lot to learn in this book. I wouldn't have minded reading a little less detail on some of the progress (or lack of) on some of his lesser works and some of his travels. But for the Steinbeck fan, this is a must-read.

About the Author
Ann has been involved in mathematics education for 21 years, 11 of which she has taught everything from basic skills to Pre-Calculus at high school level. For seven years Ann prepped juniors and seniors for the ACT exam. Currently, she oversees math instruction at three high schools in Colorado and is responsible for helping to raise ACT scores in math.

Alex has taught high school English for 14 years in the Denver, Colorado, area. He currently is at Arapahoe High School, where he teaches AP English courses. In addition, Alex co-owns and operates the ACT Review Group, which offers both ACT preparation classes and private tutoring.

Jonathan has taught high school science for more than 20 years at West Leyden High School in Northlake, IL. During that time, he has taught review courses for the ACT and SAT. He has worked in labs at the Weizmann Institute of Science, the Nanoscale Science and Engineering Center, and the Feinberg School of Medicine. Jonathan has also received local and state recognition for outstanding teaching.

Good advice for general improvement, bad advice for those seeking perfection

I've been tutoring the ACT professionally for about 8 years. I'm only giving this book three stars because I don't think it delivers on its promise to get students to a perfect score. A much better title would be, "ACT prep for smart kids who want to improve their scores but who can't be bothered to learn every little thing the ACT will cover".

My first area of concern is the English and Math sections. This book doesn't cover all tested concepts (of which there are many) for either section. It covers most of them. How are students supposed to get perfect scores without full coverage?

My second main area of concern is question and practice test realism. The writers don't work for the ACT and do not reliably duplicate the nuances and complexities of real ACT questions. Furthermore, they don't point students to the obvious source of better practice material, The Real ACT Prep Guide (published by the ACT).

So although this book contains good advice, it's incomplete and certainly not a one-stop-shop for a perfect score. If you REALLY want a perfect score, you'll probably have to analyze several real ACT tests until you can identify what each problem is testing, not just get it right. Additionally, I'd recommend looking for books that just cover one section of the test. These books have a narrower focus and can therefore cover all the little concepts missing from ACT 36.

The book is great if you want to score 3 or 4 pointers ...

The book is great if you want to score 3 or 4 pointers higher on the practice tests.

There are some things in this book that don't cover on the practice ACT tests online and on the ones within the Red Book (3rd edition).
For instance, I don't necessarily agree with the reading and science strategies in this book.
I tried using the strategy where I would try to simplify the reading passages. This did not turn out well.
I increased my score of 22 on Reading to 29-30 average by simply locating where the specific examples are. No matter what the ACT questions, the answer will always be somewhere in the text. It took me over 5 practice tests to realize that. The science section is the same concept as well. I increased my score of 24 to 30 by doing the same. Overall, I think this book needs an update to match the current contents of the ACT. This deserves 4 stars because it does motivate me to work harder.

I did worse in June than i had previously

I hardcore reviewed this book before the June Act. I did worse in June than i had previously!! It definitely helped for english grammar but other than that the book was to in-depth and had to much unnecessary material that stressed me out for the test. I say just stick with the big red act book and dont spend money on this.

This book in it's fourth edition is better suited as a historical look at architectural drawings. It is strongly lacking in CAD production standards; some of the other standards and terminologies mentioned are outdated and do not reflect a concensus of how we professionals practice; a lot of the graphics used are poor quality and are difficult to read.
