Swensen has been the chief investment officer for the past 14 years at Yale University, where he is responsible for managing and investing more than $6 billion of the university's endowment assets and investment funds. Realizing an annual return of more than 16 percent on his investments, Swensen has added more than $2 billion to Yale's coffers, and his consistent track record has attracted the notice of Wall Street portfolio managers. Here Swensen provides a brief history of endowment funds and explains the purpose of endowment accumulation and the goals for institutional portfolios. One of the strategies behind his success has been to diversify asset classes and move beyond a reliance on domestic marketable securities. He distinguishes between traditional and alternative asset classes, looks at performance evaluation issues and tools, and considers the investment decision-making process. About the Author
David F. Swensen is the chief investment officer of Yale University and the bestselling author of Pioneering Portfolio Management. He serves on the boards of TIAA, The Brookings Institution, Carnegie Institution, and Hopkins School. At Yale, where he produced an unparalleled two-decade investment record of 16.1 percent-per-annum returns, he teaches economics classes at Yale College and finance classes at Yale?s School of Management. Mr. Swensen lives in New Haven, Connecticut.

Truly unique insight into institutional portfolio management

Swensen's book is a must-read for endowment managers and other institutional investors, particularly those who take a fund-of-funds approach (as does Yale, where Swensen is Chief Investment Officer). Swensen aptly lays out the investment policy that has enabled Yale to consistently outperform other U.S. endowments. As Yale's CIO, Swensen has set a target portfolio allocation that departs significantly from the still heavily U.S. equity and debt-focused strategy of most endowments. Swensen's approach includes a large allocation to asset classes that are not highly correlated to the U.S. public equity market. He outlines these "alternative" classes in his book, giving the reader an excellent view of how alternative investments can increase risk-adjusted portfolio returns.
Perhaps the biggest contribution of Swensen's book, however, is the debunking of myths that still lull fiducaries into making the wrong decisions, for example when it comes to picking investment managers. Swensen advises against chasing managers who have performed well simply because of their past performance. If attributes such as personal integrity and the right fee structure are lacking, solid past performance can become a liability, not an asset. Swensen describes the example of private equity firm KKR-- after tremendous early successes, the flood of investor capital into KKR enabled the firm's partners to set up a fee structure that ensured big payoffs for themselves even if their funds underperformed. This is just one of many valuable lessons the reader will draw from Swensen's book.

Essential reading for endowment stewardship

This survey of endowment investing offers an incisive framework for how to think about investable assets of charitable institutions. The value of the book is that Swensen has thought long and hard about how endowment investing differs from personal wealth management and how those differences ripple through almost all aspects of overseeing and implementing endowment investments. As the chair of an endowment investment committee and the author of the Endowment Stewardship blog, I find all of Swensen's insights valuable, but especially his chapters on endowment purposes, investment and spending goals, investment philosophy and investment process. [...]Also, if you're an individual investor trying to copy Yale, this book will explain why you're wasting your time.

Many good insights

David Swensen reveals many insights available only from experience which are valuable for individuals and boards responsible for guiding large portfolios. I wished for more detail regarding the manager selection guidelines and asset allocation/reallocation criteria however we must respect that this information is proprietary.

No matter how high the hippies got, most had to come back to earth, cut their hair, get jobs, and "sell out" their counterculture. High Art flashes back to when love and LSD were free and psychedelic posters were not bankable art. The boldly and beautifully colored reproductions do the mystic and merry tripper's visions justice; however, after an insightful introduction to the social and political climate of the 1960s and the poster artists' influences, the written content of this book wavers. For the profiles of American poster artists and the rock venues and promoters that employed them, the authors reprinted deep but sometimes outdated pieces from the 1976 exhibition catalog San Francisco Rock Poster Art by historian Walter Medeiros. Their original coverage of the British scene with direct quotes from the artists is more engaging. Why psychedelic art blacked out in the 1980s and soared in popularity in the mid- and late 1990s is not explored either. Recommended where demand warrants.AHeather McCormack, "Library Journal"

Far out but not Outtasight!!!

First off, fair warning: If you think you might like to own this book then you should buy it now as this is a highly collectable book. Essentially, this is a survey of the 1960's era psychedelic concert/venue poster genre that sprang up in San Francisco before spreading throughout the USA and the world in the form of the 'black light' poster.
The author, a British music promoter who became a poster art aficionado, has done a good job of describing the development and rise of the genre as well as tying it into the overall history of the advertising art poster beginning in the 'Belle Epoque.' Within chapters, he singles out artists and their work and places them in the context of the movement. The national origin of the author is a factor here as it is obvious that the author has personal relationships with and has a more intimate knowledge of the British poster artists and art scene than he has with those of the American scene. Still, he does a more than adequate job covering the domestic American scene. This book weighs a ton because of the excellent, thick, paper stock it is printed on and because the English printer used lavish amounts of eyepopping brightly colored ink in its printing. As a sidenote, there is a fascinating section on acid blotter paper art with accompanying photographs, and a section on collecting psychedelic posters. PLUS, to get one's collection going, new copies of the book include a coupon for a complimentary psychedelic poster from Alan Forbes and the San Francisco Art Lab.
I rate this book only four stars because 1) due to its highly collectible nature, it should have been published in hardback also. 2) The author cites some work by an artist and then fails to picture/identify it. 3) This topic begs for a book at least twice a long as it is.
Still, I am quite certain that any purchaser will be more than happy with it.

A highly informative book with beautiful graphics for those interested in vintage posters of the 60's or graphic arts or typology. Detailed information on the individual artists such as Victor Moscoco, Stanley Mouse, Randy Tuten, and my favorite but more obscure Bonnie MacLean who was a Fillmore staff member responsible for the chalkboard announcements at that venue. Includes American and British Artists. The unique use of color and fonts, which were influenced by the Victorian and Art Nouveau era makes this a must buy for art, graphics, and design students and vintage poster collectors. And if you grew up in the 60's like me, this book is a bit of nostalgia that shows that the art work was really well executed even under the influence....

Ah, the nostalgia this book brings back. Not only the beautiful art work, but the musical groups, the "High" Priests and Priestesses of the era - Tim Leary, Grace Slick, etc. I thought it was interesting that this style of Art poster is making a comeback! Check out the last few pages with posters for Soundgarden, Hole, Beastie Boys and TOM JONES!!!
High quality printing and paper. A certificate for a LImited Edition Poster is included.
One of the books authors, Ted Owen, was involved in the music scene of the era. He helped discover groups like The Pretenders, Adam & The Ants and The Cure.

This is a 30 days with a great spiritual teacher, Francis of Assisi. It starts out with My Day Begins, then All Through Your Day, and finishes with As Your Day Is Ending.

My Day Begins: set aside a quiet moment in a quiet place to read the meditation suggested for the day. The passage is short. It has been carefully selected to give a spiritual focus, a spiritual center to your whole day.

All Through Your Day: you will find a single sentence which we call a mantra, a word borrowed from the Hindu tradition. This phase is meant as a companion for your spirit as it moves through a busy day.

As Your Day Is Ending: This is a time for letting go of the day. Find a quiet place and quiet your spirit. Breathe deeply. Inhale, exhale-slowly and deliberately again and again until you feel your body let go of its tension. Now read the evening prayer slowly, phrase by phrase. In this way, a simple evening prayer gathers together the spiritual character of the day that is now ending as it began--in the presence of God. It is a time for summary and closure. Invite God to embrace you with love and to protect you through the night. Sleep well.

I have deeped my prayer and found this book to be a great guide for me to work with in praying. Francis of Assisi is one of my favorite Saints and a great spiritual teacher. I feel very blessed having this book. Everyone who wants to learn how to pray should buy this.

a thoughtful book

This whole series of books is wonderful -- easily read and worth lingering over a second time. The thoughts are concise and not ponderous. They speak to heart of anyone who has doubts, fears, concerns, worries and joys and happiness --- so that does not let anyone out!! There are also prayers which are meant for many people in many situations. I would highly recommend this entire series of books.
