Readers learn early on about Mary's stints in rehab, but it is a third of the way into the book when it is revealed that she has cystic fibrosis. Mary Rose has been in and out of the hospital all her life with this disease, but she doesn't dwell on it. Like the fictional Go Ask Alice (Prentice Hall, 1971), this is a first-person account of a girl detailing the poor choices she has made. Though a depressing picture emerges, the writing style has a beautiful lyricism. Legs McNeil is the coauthor of "Please Kill Me: The Uncensored Oral History of Punk", a book widely hailed as the definitive work on the subject. The founder of the seminal magazine that gave punk its name, he is a former editor at "Spin" and editor-in-chief of "Nerve". McNeil also wrote Marilyn Chambers's comeback film, "Still Insatiable". He is also the author of the forthcoming "The Other Hollywood: The Uncensored Oral History of the Porn Film Industry". He divides his time between New York and Los Angeles.

Thought-provoking and gritty

*I was given a free copy of this book in return for my honest opinion*

What I loved about Mary Rose's story was how from one entry to the next she seemed like a different person. It reminded me of my own journals as a teen, when one week a boy would be the all-encompassing thing I wrote about and the next it would be something bigger or smaller, but totally unrelated to the boy. There were things in Mary Rose's diary I could totally relate to and things that completely shocked me. One moment being full of confidence and on top of the world, the next moment feeling like the ugliest, lowest person on the planet... that's just being a teenager. But some of the situations she put herself in... it made me realize my own teen angst was not so bad. The truly intriguing thing for me was getting a true description of cystic fibrosis from someone actually suffering from it. No antiseptic doctor speak here, just a girl trying to deal with a terminal illness in the best ways she knew how. The gritty reality of teen drinking and drugs, of a family that couldn't quite get it together, and of first love with all its pain and glory... Mary Rose wrote of these things with an honesty and a beauty far older than her years. I have to thank her mother for allowing this look inside Mary Rose's life. I hope that young women who read this book will see that they are not alone in their ricocheting feelings, that it is really normal to have such highs and lows. And I hope Mary Rose inspires people with CF to fight the good fight with all they have. A truly beautiful look at the life of a normal teenage girl dealing with abnormal circumstances.

Heartbreaking

I received a copy of this book from Netgalley and Sourcebooks Fire in exchange for an honest review.

Dear Nobody: The True Diary of Mary Rose is a story of a girl struggling to escape her demons. It is a very raw story of a very real girl who suffered through some traumatic issues and tried to find an escape through drugs. Mary Rose was handed a s***ty hand of cards and tried to play them the only way she knew how. Having read Go Ask Alice I expected something like that, but this book is in a whole different league.

I found this book to be absolutely heartbreaking, as no one should have to go through what Mary Rose did. My only issue with it is that it is a diary and not a novel, so it jumped around a bit. There wasn't much of an introduction to every new person, and at times I felt as if I didn't know who Mary Rose was talking about. None of that prevented me from getting wrapped up in Mary Rose's life though.

This story made me cry, not during the book, but after I was done reading and was thinking about it. Throughout most of the book Mary Rose is starting her diary entries with "Dear Nobody", clearly thinking that she didn't have anyone who would ever care to read it. Yet obviously there were people that cared about her enough to go get this published. I found it to be a great tribute to her as she mentioned how she would someday like to be an actor or an author.

I would suggest this for any teenager, anyone who has ever struggled with disease or drugs, anyone who has ever suffered a loss of a loved one and anyone who has ever felt alone in this world. I think we all go through times in life where we feel unloved, lonely and sad. But after the book is over it is clear that there were people that cared about Mary Rose, even if she didn't see it.

Gritty and raw but lacked the strong connection I wanted

Dear Nobody: The True Diary of Mary Rose is the real, gritty, and honest diary of the teenage lost soul, Mary Rose.

Mary Rose totally got the short end of the stick. She has an absent father, a not-so-fabulously-behaved mother, and her mother’s boyfriend is abusive. Mary Rose also happens to have cystic fibrosis and seems to have a hard time making friends. So what does Mary Rose do?

She turns to drugs and alcohol, the only things that will make her feel normal and “fit in” with the crowd. But of course, addiction isn’t known to solve many people’s problems.

Dear Nobody is addicting to read – I could not put it down, and didn’t, until I was finished. It was heart-wrenching and devastating at times.

With that said, the book fell a little flat for me. I know it sounds strange since it’s a true story, all in Mary Rose’s real diary entries, but I wasn’t as emotionally hooked onto Mary Rose as I expected to be.

THE MOVIE WAS MUCH BETTER

The movie was much better. I almost gave up on reading this but I kept reading and it was ok but I liked the movie better. If I had not seen the movie first I may have liked it better.The movie will keep you on the edge of your seat the book will not. if you have never seen the movie it is pretty good but the movie is a really good thriller.

One of My Favorites

I love this book so much I have twice tracked down used copies of it after losing a copy. If I lose this copy, I'll be looking to replace it again. It has a permanent place on my bookshelf. I reread it about once a year. This is not a novelization, for anyone who might be wondering. This is an original novel that inspired the screenplay that most people are more familiar with.

It's hard to explain the appeal of this book, since the subject is so difficult to read about, but I'll try. I think it has to do with the supportive female relationships depicted in the book. If you've seen the movie, you already know the action that sets the plot in motion, but you've only seen a little of the web of relationships the heroine develops in the book.

The plot is exciting, and again, anyone who has seen the movie that was based on this book (or a half a dozen movie knock-offs) is already familiar with it: a woman is so determined to break free of her abusive, controlling husband that she fakes her own death in order to escape. And again, the falling action begins after the husband discovers that she might really be alive.

It's what happens in between that makes this book a keeper for me. If you've seen the movie, you've seen that the heroine develops a cautious but sweet relationship with Ben, her drama teacher neighbor in her new town. That happens in the book, too. You've also seen that the heroine has a beautiful relationship with her mother. That is also in the book, but there is so much more. Remember the African violets Julia Roberts lovingly sets on a windowsill during the housecleaning montage? Those have a great deal of significance in the book, and they are directly related to the heroine's relationship with her mother. There are a number of beautifully written relationships in this novel, some of them offered as vignettes featuring side characters who don't appear in the film, and some directly related to the heroine (I will keep using that term because the book and movie switch her real name/alias and I want to avoid confusion). As the heroine rediscovers who she is, she also rediscovers how to make connections to the other people around her, especially the women she encounters. The theme of reclaiming the self that is so integral to the film is present here as well, but there is a strong undercurrent of reclaiming the self-in-community in the book, and it's not easy for her. She has to overcome barriers that she has built up to protect herself. It's a wonderful read.

The suspense aspect is back as well, when Martin, the husband, begins trying to track the heroine down. I won't spoil the ending because there is a slight difference between the book and the movie. It's enough of a difference to avoid spoiling it, but I will say this: I preferred the movie's ending on my first read, but on subsequent reads, I realized the author was trying to make a specific point with her staging of the denouement. It's not a downer ending, don't get me wrong, but it does create a different impression, of the heroine, of Martin, and of everything that has led up to that point.

Well, enough of my blathering. This book is out of print but there are still a number of used copies in circulation and they are currently not expensive to get hold of. Take advantage of that while you can and get yourself a copy!

The book stands on its own as a great piece of work...

I was surprised when I found out that the movie was based on a novel by the same name. I was even more surprised when I found the novel at my local library a while back. But what took my breath away was that the book was in fact ten times better and a bit different than the movie.
You probably know the plot and characters by now, so I won't go into that. What I will say is that the writing is some of the best prose I've read in a thriller novel of this kind, and the bad guy (the husband) is one of the most realistic and most interesting villains in modern fiction. The main character, Sara, has life breathed into her through Ms. Price's writing that the movie never had a hope of matching, and I found myself caring for her and those around her greatly, while at the same time anticipating when her husband would find her.
If you've seen the movie, you owe it to yourself to read this book. If you liked the movie, read the book to get an entirely different and much better form of the main plot. If you hated the movie, read the book so you can see how the movie 'should' have been.
Great work, Ms. Price, I'll have to be looking for more novels by her. This book gets a high recommendation from me. Pick it up!

About the Author
Jennifer Waldeck (Ph.D., University of California, Santa Barbara) is an Assistant Professor of Communication at Chapman University, in Orange, California, where she teaches undergraduates and is on the core faculty of the M.S. program in Health and Strategic Communication. She specializes in instructional and organizational communication research, with an emphasis on the effective use of new and emerging technologies for learning purposes. Her research has appeared in such journals as Communication Monographs, Communication Education, The Journal of Applied Communication Research, Communication Research Reports, and The Journal of Business Communication. She is the author of more than 100 research articles, chapters, instructional texts, professional reports, and proprietary instructional packages. Before joining the faculty of Chapman, Waldeck was the Director of Curriculum Development for Scher Group, a Cleveland-based consulting firm. Waldeck continues to provide research, consulting, and training for a variety of organizations in the automotive, real estate, and healthcare industries. Today, she regularly teaches undergraduate courses in business and professional communication, organizational communication, persuasion and social influence, research methods., and graduate seminars on training, consulting, and corporate communication skills for the healthcare industry.

Patricia Kearney (Ed.D., West Virginia University) is a Distinguished Professor of Communication at California State University, Long Beach. Her research and teaching, both theoretical and applied, focus on instructional communication, organizational training, and development. The former Editor of Communication Education, Kearney has written a variety of textbooks and industrial training packages, and she has published more than 100 research articles, chapters, and commissioned research reports and instructional modules. She is listed among the 100 most published scholars and among the top 15 published female scholars in her discipline. Kearney is the Education Director for Ross.Campbell, a Sacramento-based marketing and media production firm specializing in cause-related, social and environmental issues. She teaches courses in business communication, training and development, instructional technology, and interpersonal relationships.

Timothy G. Plax (Ph.D., University of Southern California) is a Distinguished Professor of Communication at California State University, Long Beach. Plax is widely published, having authored college-level texts and over 150 professional articles and papers. With 30 years of experience in marketing research and message design, Plax is an authority on social influence and organizational communication. He has done extensive research and consulting on environmental topics including recycling, waste reduction, and pollution prevention. His clients include the California Air Resources Board, California Integrated Waste Management Board, California Department of Conservation, USA Funds, Sallie Mae, Gear Up, and more. Before joining the faculty at CSULB, Plax served as an internal consultant for The Rockwell International Corporation. Today he regularly teaches courses in organizational communication, social influence, and organizational leadership.

I really enjoyed learning through this book

I really enjoyed learning through this book. It offers a variety of professional advice that can be carried with you throughout all your professional experiences in life. I actually refer to this book often, even during other courses because its contents are so useful. From writing reports, to creating a presentation through PowerPoint, to professional communication with co-workers, to job interviews, this book gives you tips and recommendations for it all! This book also offers real life examples so that you may understand concepts and definitions. It truly outlines the importance of good communication skills in professional settings and compares these skills to less professional settings. Many other products do not provide information like this. Many other communication books do not offer advice; they just define and leave you to interpret the concepts. This book is not boring to read or study, and it is an excellent tool when preparing for the future. The objective of this book is to prepare the reader or the student to be a better communicator, listener, and professional.

I really like the outline and order of the sections in this text. It first starts with the basics like professional competence to help the reader understand the model of communication. It then refers to communication in the workplace and how to make your best effort count in the real world. The job interview process is also addressed in the text by sharing the appropriate way to conduct oneself and by offering questions that you should be prepared to answer in the interview. Along with this, if your book is new and comes with the on-line portion (CourseMate), there are modules that show how to write a resume and cover letter by giving advice and examples. The book also teaches how to create a presentation based on the audience, topic, and your own credibility. With this, sensory aids are proposed to help you make your presentation a success. Lastly, the book helps you present yourself in professional and business writing. I also liked that at the end of each chapter, key points are listed to help you study and review for tests and projects. The above topics are the features of the book that really stuck with me after studying it and learning.

Even if you are not a student, but you are preparing to job hunt or to create professional work through communication, I highly advise taking a look at this book. I have used information I learned through this book to create presentations and to write professional e-mails, papers, formal reports, and resumes. Overall, I consider this book a great resource for business courses and for future reference. I know that I will look through it often, as I become closer to reaching my professional degree.

About the Author
Chandler has been nominated twice for a Cable Emmy for comedy editing. Gael has edited every type of genre on every medium: film, tape, and digital; and has trained hundreds of professionals and students to put their best cut forward. She has written a handful of feature screenplays, one of which won the Scriptwriters Networks' Producers Outreach Program contest. Her first book was Cut by Cut: How to Edit Your Film or Video. Additionally, she has created numerous online courses on a variety of subjects, including editing.

Excellent book, but for limited audience

The book is very well written. It is well organized, clear and consise. It gives an excellent overview of the entire workflow of editing in both the digital and film realms. It also does a nice job comparing the two mediums. The tables scattered throughout the book are quite helpful and an effective way at allowing one to compare and contrast the items being discussed.
The limit too the books potential though is that most of its discussions are in a summary nature. Its like a tasting menu at a fine restaurant. Everything presented to you is wonderful, but it leaves you unsatisifed and wanting more. There is just not much there to entice one to return to this book later. The technical materials it does cover are those you would hope most people who call themself an editor would be know; as a result it does not serve much function as a reference material. Thus, this book is best served as an introduction to editing for the novice editor. But in that role it does a fine job. Especially by including discussions of job finding strategies, web sites, and dealing with bad situations in the workplace.
So if you're an experienced editor looking for an interesting read about editing (which so many are because its so rare to find one) stick to Walter Murch and Gabriella Oldham. If you're looking to break out into the editing world though, definitely give this book a read through (especially all you digital only folks, this will help you appreciate the film end of the spectrum). I also highly recommond this book, or at least parts of it, for producers, directors and cinematographers. Maybe then the production end might be a little more mindful of their demands on the post production end (though probably not).

If you want a career in the film industry, I highly recommend this book.

I am an assistant (and sometimes still an apprentice) editor. When my Academy Award winning editor/boss told me to get this book, I didn't believe him. I knew how to run the Avid in my sleep and was getting jobs. But he was using it and recommending it to everyone he knew and then it was reviewed in this month's (July/August) Editors Guild magazine by a guy I trust. So I ordered it. Now ­I am recommending it. It covers everything you want to know about editing but were afraid to ask. It talks about the process and why editor's cut, not just how to digitize (it covers that generally) and how to get a job (I agree.) It has lots of useful charts and tables of all the stuff that you forget to remember such as formats, aspect ratios, film-to-tape conversion and vice versa. The author has clearly been in the editing trenches. I like her humorous tidbits and historical references like how R2D2 got his name. She also covers film - syncing, cutlists, neg cutting, etc. thoroughly which freaks the computer generation like me sometimes just as much as digital stuff can freaks older editors and directors. The film information as well as the digital, Web, DVD, and tape processes she so thoroughly details, have been invaluable to me in my work, paid and non. Speaking of which, gotta get back to my web film!

As one who teaches editing at several universities, including Long Beach State and UCLA, I am familiar with a number of books, both current and otherwise, on the subject. Some of them I have used in conjunction with my courses. Gael Chandler's book is a welcome addition to this library of editing lore. Besides describing the details of the editing process, the book also features many quotes and tips from established editors. Finally we have a comprehensive text on the subject for every student of editing, written in an understandable manner without sacrificing content. It is what God and DeMille intended.

I met Gael Chandler several years ago when she was teaching a Final Cut Pro class. She is a pioneer of electronic editing dating back to the Ediflex. After getting to know me, she asked if I would review a couple of chapters to the book she was writing, and give comment, on working on film since Film Editing on the Moviola is one of the classes that I teach. This I was happy to do and I allowed her to shoot stills of my editing equipment. Since that time I have been eager to see if the finished book would pass muster and I'm pleased to report that it does.

Beginning with her forward that describes the significance of "persistence of vision," the anomaly to which we all owe our careers, and continuing with Director Brian Levant's comment that "...editors are the most skilled, happiest people I've ever known," Chandler goes on to describe in detail our craft which she notes, "...is both magical and mundane." She demonstrates an extensive knowledge of the post production process.

The book is geared towards the beginning editor, but the more seasoned professional can still make use of its many charts and tables. The fact that she includes both film and video makes her book comprehensive. There is a lot of film information included that is not readily found anywhere else and for novice editors this is important.

In describing the three video systems (NTSC, PAL and SECAM) in a footnote she recounts the joke among the techs as to what each system represents. NTSC is Never Twice the Same Color, while PAL equates to Pay A Lot and SECAM is reduced to System Essentially Contrary to American Method. This humor adds to the readability of the volume.

Chandler also goes into why we make cuts, though many current filmmakers seem to think one should cut merely for the sake of cutting. She recounts the late Edward Dmytryk's comment, "...cutting should always be conceived to show the viewer what he should see at every point in the film." As anything we do in editing does, this book is written from the heart by someone who cares about the craft they have pursued for a lifetime.

For the beginner there is advice on how to find work, join the union and make contacts. She lays it out as methodically as she does the steps of the editing process and emphasizes that, "...it's not what you know, but who you know."

Gael Chandler sums it up beautifully with this paragraph. "Editing is not for the wimp, space case, or the indifferent. You need stamina and desire to see you through. Keep your passion for your career, loved ones, and pursuit of happiness in balance when following an editing path and you'lll be surprised where it leads you."
