SHAMANS GIVEN THE VOICE OF PRINT !!!!!!

This is a classic, A true voice of the shamans ! The entries, or Shamans given a voice of print here is greatly varied, time wise (Shamans may disagree here) and geographically. What I really love about this volume is that it produces what the title implies.The author does indeed let the Shamans have their say, accompanied by her more than able prose, this book is surely a sublime offering of wisdom and is true art!!!! From Crow Dog to Black Elk to Sereptie to Maria Sabina to Manuel Cordova-Rios to Isaac Tens to Prem Das to many others, if you can find a more varied source of true Indigenous Shamanic wisdom, Please let me know, because it would already be in my Cart !!!! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED !!!!

One of the Best.

Books on shamanism tend to be quite a mixed bunch in terms of quality. Shamanic Voices though is one of the best and most authentic (steering well clear of the flakey "new age" type of shamanism). I would also recommend highly Wizard of the Upper Amazon or any book by Jeremy Narby. Joan Halifax has collected a variety of writtings in this book, my favorite of which is the artic shamans and also the slightly sad story of the aboriginal Australian shaman who lost his power. This is one of my favorite books and comes highly recommended!

The Real Deal

This book is for the serious apprentice, though it's possible casual readers might enjoy the stories as well. Those looking for new age fluff should pass on this text, until they can learn to appreciate hands-on techniques 'solitude & suffering to transcend' and other fun topics like that. I've read many books on shamanism over the years but this one is the one I'd prefer to keep with me in place of all the others. This and perhaps Shapeshifting by John Perkins.

Spectacular

A brilliant and fantastic insight into one of the worlds most under-appreciated sports, and the stresses and strains that professional sportsmen have to endure. The story itself is as heart-warming as it is brutal - it is a true testament to what can be achieved if one is willing to put everything they physically and mentally have into a sport. At times, this is a very difficult read, highlighting the otherwise hidden world of professional sport and how crushing it can sometimes be on a person. As one of the first public outputs from the game of squash, I sincerely hope this grabs the attention of the public, as squash suffers from a severe deficiency in public awareness and support. James talks about himself and the current world no.2 Nick Matthew, who are seldom recognised as two of the greatest British sportsmen of our generation, and whom we should be incredibly proud. One can only hope that this helps to build squashing increasingly positive reputation to the point where the IOC recognise it's benefit and potential.

Most of all however, this book serves as a rare illustration to the incredibly positive effects sport and especially squash can have on a person's life and how they can become defined by it. James stands as a truly fantastic role model for sportsmen, a gentleman and a true ambassador for the game. His character will serve as a priceless positive asset for as long as James stays on the PSA Tour - a true genius with a racket as well as being an extraordinarily nice person and unfalteringly moral.

To the rest of the sporting world - I urge you to stand up and take note of this spectacular sport, and of this remarkable character and truly gifted sportsman.

Great insight into the world of Squash and the mind of a top athlete

I really enjoyed this book. In fact I couldn't put it down once I picked it up.
It delivers an open and honest insight in to the mind of James Wilstrop and a fascinating look at what it takes to be a World Class squash player.

From the rivalry with Nick Matthew, to life with a dad as a coach, with insight into his levels of obsessive compulsiveness, and taking on board the effects of his mom dying too soon, James tackles all topics and delivers both a gripping story and a very human one.

For anyone who's ever picked up a squash racket or a racket of any sort and wondered what is going on in the heads of the top players then this book is a must read.

Strange Journey into Sports Trials and Tribulations

Definitely a lot of interesting information and insight into the psychological perspective of a top athlete. In a lot of ways the book is more about how James "feels" about various events, circumstances, victories, and failures. At times, it's quite interesting to see just how much of an emotional rollercoaster his career is, full of the highs and lows of winning, losing, being injured, and being bored with inactivity.

At other times there's an intense anger, indignation, and arrogance that is both repugnant, yet also honestly portrayed, which ironically is the one thing that seems humble about the author's life. I came away with a lot of mixed feelings about James Willstrop as a person and as a player. I'm undecided as to whether his work ethos is really as grand as he proclaims it to be and undecided if his anti-social behavior outside of the court is truly justified. Frankly, the fellow seems to demonstrate knowledge in a very narrow band of experience (just competitive squash) and his approach to life as a result is somewhat strange and alien to most people. I wanted to chide him for telling an amateur club player that he wouldn't play him unless he was paid to...but perhaps it's not that he was wrong to turn down an amateur, but that he was wrong to be so upset about it.

There is a lot of discussion of his mother and her battle with cancer as well. This is a sensitive topic, but I'm not sure how much of its inclusion is really an honest appraisal of a squash career and how much it just feels like the sort of obligatory "tragedy" that Bob Costas would have milked relentlessly in regards to any Olympic athlete. Having also lost my mother to cancer (when I was 16), I find it hard to relate to the idea that it has vastly shaped my career or that it's a noteworthy aspect of who I am - but everyone interprets grief differently, so I can't completely fault Willstrop for bringing it up.

I would have vastly preferred a great deal more information about the ins and outs of training for squash, what works and what doesn't work, what strategies to apply, what drills etc. But this is more of an autobiography than a squash training manual, so don't get your hopes up on becoming a better player as a result of the book. Instead take it more as a bizarre journey into a very harsh and often unpleasant sports career.

Good for aspiring coaches

As someone aspiring to be an effective coach I found this book to be very helpful. Particularly with the neuro-linguistics aspects of coaching, i.e. body positioning, activities and all in relationship to coaching. As a story teller I also appreciated the didactic presentations being supplemented and "enfleshed" with narratives of actual coaching situations.
For coaches that wish to incorporate somatic awareness and the desire to be fully present with their clients this volume is a must read.
He offers wonderful exercises throughout the book, many of which I used, some, alas, I did not. But they are helpful for the learning experience they provide.

Very thoughtful, reflective and provides useful excercises

For those who like the eastern approach to management, this book will be familiar. For those who are caught up in the busy-ness of management, this will provide an alternative approach and help you develop resilience for a changing environment and sustenance for the long haul. It is meant for coaching but i am not an executive coach but a manager who found it very useful.

He graduated from University College London in 2002 and completed basic surgical training before joining the Norwich radiology training scheme in 2008. William Bugg is a fi nal year radiology registrar at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital. He graduated from Imperial College London in 2002 and completed basic surgical training before joining the Norwich radiology training scheme in 2008. His subspecialty areas of interest are gastrointestinal and musculoskeletal radiology. Catherine A Johnson is a senior fellow in radiology at the Royal Marsden Hospital, London. She graduated from Imperial College London in 2002. Aft er completing her basic surgical training, she trained as a radiologist in East Anglia and London. She completed her radiology training in 2013. Her subspecialty areas of interest are oncology, genitourinary, and head and neck radiology.

Great Resource when Preparing for the Oral Board Exam!

The book is very handy resource that presents a huge amount of content in a concise manner, making it easy to read and comprehend. It provides a great number of mnemonics to help with memory recall and highlights important areas to note for the board exam. In addition, the book is filled with great images, that serve to reinforce the messages and present the content visually, aiding with your memory recall.

I would highly recommend this book to all trainees in radiology whether you are initially starting in this area or preparing for the Oral Board exam - it helped me get through it big time!

Note, this book looks to be written by someone in the UK, but is also applicable to the Oral Board exam here in the US.

Okay, but not in depth and lacks some topics

Start looks promising, but later on it gets less and less detailed: almost only code examples with hardly any background information. Also a number of (imho) important topics are not covered, like protocols and delegation. As a starter it's okay, but if you want more background info for a better understanding of Objective-C I would advise another book like the Big Nerd Ranch Guide 2nd ed (which I am reading now ;-)

PS Please note that this review is about revision 3.1 of the book that covers IOS7.
