The Ethics of Secular Humanism

At about the age of 23 I discovered for the first time that I had a mind. Previous to that, I had been more-or-less incapable of any sort of introspection. Smoking marijuana opened my unconscious mind and I felt like I was able to step outside of myself and see myself for the first time. I immediately started reading books other than adventure novels. One of the first authors I discovered was Eric Fromm. His thinking completely galvanized me. I thought that he had figured out all human problems, and all people had to do was pay attention. I knew essentially nothing about Freud, Jung, Marx, Nietzsche, and so on, and Fromm synthesized all of their thinking into a coherent system. Fromm championed the bogey-man of right-wing Christianity, namely secular humanism. The idea of which is that the foundations for value systems should be based on man’s autonomy and reason. In order to know what was good for man, one has to know the nature of man. Authoritarian ethics is an irrational system based on acquiring power over people. This strikes me as so self-evident that it’s incredible that it could arouse controversy. Fromm claims that one of the best tools for knowing human nature is psychoanalysis.

These days Freud’s ideas are commonly held to be erroneous, and some critics dismiss Fromm’s ideas as he relies upon ideas of Freud. This is nonsense. Freud was one of mankind’s greatest geniuses. While it is true that his motivations discoveries he made regarding human nature were physiologically clockwork, following the prejudices of his time, Fromm acknowledged this. Too completely dismiss Freud’s ideas on this basis would be like denouncing Kepler’s equations because he thought that planetary motion was caused by the “Holy Spirit,” or Newton’s theory of gravity because he explained it in terms of action at a distance.

Rereading Fromm forty some years later, I am astonished at the extent to which he and I think alike. No doubt, this is because I devoured his work at an impressionable time of my life. So I still think that his ideas should be taught in high school. One thing I’ve become convinced of over the years is that irrational devotion to dogma is most often the source of evil, whether the dogma is religious or political. Teaching young people to not enslave their minds to authoritarian dogma is simply sane.

Can there be an ethical system that does not rely on moral absolutes on the one hand or moral relativism on the other? Is there any other way? This book says yes and -- amazingly, brilliantly -- lays it out in a way that makes perfect sense. The only value we can know, the only value we need, and the only value that can have any real claim on us is OUR value, human value, and that is neither absolute nor relativistic. If this sounds absurd or offensive to you, skip this book. If you see the brilliance in it, you're in for a treat. I've read this book several times and can't get enough. Fromm is an underappreciated genius.

He also headed a center-of-excellence for portals and is currently the practice lead for enterprise portal practice. He led multiple thought-leadership and productivity improvement initiatives and was part of special interest groups (SIG) related to emerging web technologies at his organization.

He holds numerous professional certifications including Oracle Certified Master (OCM) Java Enterprise Edition 5, Sun certified Java programmer, Sun Certified Business component developer, IBM certified Solution Architect - Cloud computing, IBM Certified Solution Developer - IBM WebSphere Portal 6.1 and many others.

The author also shares some of the best industry wide practices as well as a lot of useful tips and techniques to meet the challenges faced to adhere to the NFRs. This book is a must read for all software professionals who aspire to become technical solution architects. One of the finest novels ever written!

It is not hard to see why this modern masterpiece was awarded the Pulitzer Prize in 1939. It was made into a classic movie starring Gregory Peck as Penny Baxter and was illustrated by the legendary N.C. Wyeth. They would not have exhausted their immense talents on a mediocre book (as some of the reviews have expressed- were they reading the same book as me?).

The story is beautifully crafted and it flows effortlessly. The homespun language is quaint and is perfect for the book (which is set in the late 1800s). The author knew the intricacies of nature in Florida and described it with exactness and beauty. There are many sections of the book that are filled with warm humor and lightheartedness. The deep closeness between the father and son is touching as well as the love between the husband and wife.

Life was a tough struggle then and it is brought out with great skill. Rawlings was a master of timing and description.

(For those high school students who were forced to read the book- read it again in ten years. I felt the same way about "To Kill A Mockingbird". In high school I hated it. Later in life- I loved it. Maturity adds a lot to any book).

N.C. Wyeth's illustrations are perfect for the story. His use of strong directional lighting is fabulous. I would recommend the Scribner Classic (hardcover) with his illustrations in it.

Rawlings lived in the heart of the Florida woods in the winter time and was a keen observer of nature and men. I think I learned more about hunting from this book than from any other source.

Because this book lacks sex, extreme violence, aliens or risque humor- perhaps it might seem dull to some- but it is for those very reasons that I was enthralled with it. Imagine a book filled with brilliant writing, a complex plot which is weaved by a consummate artist and many secondary adventures all which fortify the plot and without one tinge of cussing!

This book deserves ten stars not five.

Life knocks a man down

An incomparable story of growth and survival in the most difficult conditions. The Yearling, set in the scrubland of northern Florida a couple of decades after the Civil War, is the story of the Baxter family: little "Penny" Baxter, the father, a saintly figure who is wise, understanding, kind, brave, dutiful, stoic; Ory, the mother, whose essential goodness has been buried to some degree by endless toil and the death of several babies; and Jody, who is about 12 when the story begins, a good-natured sprite for whom nature is benevolent and everything is to be explored.

The Baxters live some 15 miles from the nearest town and four miles from their nearest neighbors, the Forresters, a family of massive sons who are variously good hearted and murderous drunks. In this environment, the little Baxter family scratches out its existence.

Two themes predominate: the loss of childhood innocence and Implacable Nature. The latter is depicted in a variety of ways: a legendary maurauding bear that is seemingly impossible to kill; a pack of hungry wolves several dozen strong; a flood that destroys everything in its path and leaves the plague in its wake; a terrible poisonous snake that threatens the life of one of the characters. In this unforgiving environment, Penny forges ahead at all times, hunting and farming to provide for his little brood, rarely at a loss despite the continual setbacks that afflict "Baxter's Island," the small territory that the family owns.

It's not all harshness, however. Moments of beauty break through at intervals, particularly when father and son are off on a leisurely hunt. There is often a great reverence shown for flowers, trees, waterways, birds, animals, and the landscape as a whole. A lovely character named Fodder-wing (of the Forrester clan) has a whole backwoods menagerie, one that young Jody would duplicate were it not for opposition from his mother, who knows all too well the trouble that animals can cause once they have grown to maturity.

The consolation prize for Jody is Flag, a fawn that he claims after its mother has been killed. Jody loves Flag as much as any 12-year-old boy in the world today loves his dog--much more, really, since it is the only thing in the world that is exclusively his.

Over the course of a year, Jody lives through all the terrors that nature--and, sometimes, man--can inflict and prepares, unknowingly, to eventually take over Penny's role as provider for the family. In the opening chapter, Jody has a particularly fine time off on his own, in the woods, and when it is over he cannot sleep because "a mark was on him from the day's delight, so that all his life, when April was a thin green and the flavor of rain was on his tongue, an old wound would throb and a nostalgia would fill him for something he could not quite remember." It is the last full day of his childhood innocence.

By the end, when events have taken their difficult course, it is Penny who must counsel Jody and explain how he wanted to spare Jody as long as he could from the rigors of adulthood. He explains, "A man's heart aches, seein' his young uns face the world. Knowin' they got to git their guts tore out, the way his was tore. I wanted to spare you, long as I could. I wanted you to frolic with your yearlin'." But, as he points out, life knocks you down, and when you get up, it knocks you down again. "What's he to do then? What's he to do when he gits knocked down? Why, take it for his share and go on." And Jody understands and takes up his new responsbility, to himself and to his family.

I haven't conveyed in this short review the brilliance of the descriptions of the landscape and all it contains, the richness of the many characters who populate the book, or the excitement of the twists and turns that befall the characters--but it's all there. I will close by saying that although The Yearling is catgorized as a sort of children's book, it is one that adult lovers of literature would enjoy; moreover, it would be difficult to read for those under the age of 15, I would think.

Also, for those considering reading this book to their children, as I just did, keep in mind that it's not for the squeamish. As Penny says, and as the book reveals, "You've seed how things goes in the world o' men. You've knowed men to be low-down and mean. You've seed ol' Death at his tricks. You've messed around with ol' Starvation. Ever' man wants life to be a fine thing, and a easy. 'Tis fine, boy, powerful fine, but 'tain't easy."

Good, but not my thing

I had to read this with a student, and I'm not an animal person, nor do I like long descriptions of nature. So I would say it was interesting, and I'm glad I read it, but I wouldn't pick it up again.

Great information - and fun to read!

I read a lot of business books. Most of them are filled with helpful information. Frankly, most of them are also a little on the dry. "The Happiness Advantage" is different. It is filled with fascinating research and great ideas, and it is also a hoot to read. I found myself laughing out loud as I read the book.

Shawn Achor explains the latest research he and his colleagues in the field of positive psychology have conducted. The results are fascinating:

1) Our brains work better when they are "happy."

2) There are concrete things we can do to make our brains "happier."

3) We can also overcome our inclination to procrastinate and put off these exercises. (I found this section to be particularly interesting since I am a procrastinator).

4) When our brains are at "happy" that positivity will ripple out to others and can raise the productivity.

Give this book a look. The research shows that we (and our colleagues at work) can be more productive. And, if we are "happier" our boss will also perceive us as more positive, trustworthy, sincere and successful. Wow! And who wouldn't want to be happier at work - and at home?

A Year Later

I saw Shawn Anchor's presentation on PBS where he explained a simple 5 minute technique called 'The 3 Gratitudes'.

I was brought up in a culture of pessimism and had 50 years of experience that was so deeply entrenched that I decided that I would be the perfect candidate for experimentation with such a simple exercise.

I've never had much luck trying to change my 'default mode' of negative self-concept (no matter how much therapy I've had or how many self-help books I've read) so I was really on a mission to prove this man and his ideas wrong! I listened to the whole book on tape to make sure I was doing it as explained in the television presentation and this is what I did:

It takes exactly 21 days to create a new neural pathway so you have to do the exercise everyday for 3 weeks. If you skip or forget to do it, you just keep going until you've done the exercise 21 times. If you find you're missing a lot it's just your old self trying to maintain the status quo. Tell yourself that it's less than 5 minutes a day and that you're out to prove the experiment wrong! (if you really find that you're resistant).

You want to find the part of your routine in the morning where you have a moment (well, 5 minutes) (when you're having a cup of tea or coffee for instance). Keep a notebook in that spot (at your desk or kitchen table). You must write out the experiment.

1). THE THREE GRATITUDES: Write down 3 things you are grateful for (no matter how simple or small). At first I could only write about the cup of tea I was drinking! It can be any three things big or small...As you get into this you'll get more creative and become strangely exuberant about what you feel grateful for.

2). THE DOUBLER: Next you want to take one of those three things and elaborate on it a bit (just a few sentences) OR pick a new gratitude to elaborate on. If you have more than a little time, write as much as you like.

3). THREE SMILES: Smile at 3 living creatures today (guys have to be a little careful about this one...ladies, it's easier for you but just be genuine and really smile!). Smile at your doggie, smile at your kitty, co-workers, toll-booth workers, babies, kids, old folks...

4). THE FUN-15: This one is the optional one but will speed up the process: You want to get 15 minutes of fresh air and exercise...a lovely walk with some sunshine if possible (if you're NOT up to this yet, you can add it in after 21 days when you feel better). This can be done at any time of the day, afternoon, evening (separate from the notebook work). If you already work out, you're all set.

5). CONNECT: Connect with one person today. It can even be an electronic connection...so, if you email your Mom or text a friend or your Sister, it still works!

That's all you have to do for 21 days. I started doing this about a year ago last February and after 21 days (I did not skip because I was out to prove the author wrong) I felt better. I felt a lot better. I decided that It had to be the placebo effect so I kept doing this exercise for 3 months! After 3 months I figured there was something to this neural construction thing (or whatever it's called) and I kept doing 'The 3 Gratitudes' straight through till August. I kept waiting for the music to stop but it didn't. In September I decided to experiment and I stopped doing the exercise just to see whether I would go back to default (after 7 months of being a happy, optimistic, creative and grateful person).

It has now been 7 more months of NOT doing The 3 Gratitudes and I've maintained 70-80% of the gain.

This month I have started doing the exercise again just because I WANT that 20% back! The only time I've slipped back into feelings of real pessimism was one week when I had the flu but it lifted as soon as I started recovering. It is interesting to note that the old neural networks still exist and don't go away but if you REPLACE them with better ones you can override the old belief system.

I've told my son, family members and a few friends about this marvelous phenomenon but no one is interested. I'm sharing this because it would be wonderful for me if someone could benefit from trying this too. I think people are reluctant because it sounds so corny! almost unbelievable and possibly outside some imagined comfort zone. All I know is I have a studio full of paintings and I feel kind of like that exuberant art-making kid before anyone told her that her world-view was wrong. Riveting research gets a little stifled by the author’s pride.

Did you know Shawn Achor went to Harvard?
No really. I’m quite certain of it. He only mentioned it about 27 times in this book, so it was kind of subtle, but if you read between the lines you too can pick up this hidden gem.
I promise not to mention it again – because it was the only glaring annoyance in this otherwise useful book.

This book could also be called: The Placebo Effect.
It is very very VERY real. People dismiss the effect of thought on our physical body – and it’s HUGE.

Thought is what leads to hormone release. Perception of fear releases adrenaline. Perception of happiness releases Dopamine. This book discusses Oxytocin and Cortisol and many other hormones and it points out the absolutely real physiological effects of each.

Doing the exact same physical activity, with the thought that you are exercising – leads to more weight loss and increased muscle gain. HORMONES matter. THOUGHT matters.
Being “happy” can kill pain better than narcotics. Exercising can cure depression better than antidepressants.
Being Happy decreases heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, and many other PHYSICAL diseases.
This is not about positive affirmations or “think a happy thought.” This book is not Peter Pan advice to help us fly away from tragic lives.
This book is science. Research study after research study proving that our mental outlook on life makes a HUGE difference in our physical health, our finances, our family, our friends, our entire existence.

This book is very worthwhile – because the author doesn’t just say “Get Happy” – He gives you specific tasks and practices to accomplish it.

My favorite chapter was “Principle #6: The 20 Second Rule”
It talks all about "activation energy."
It takes very little energy to keep a signal running along a nerve. But it takes a burst of energy to start the flow. You have to provide enough “activation energy” to start it. Kind of like getting a car rolling on a flat road. You have to put in a ton of energy to push the car from a dead stop but once it’s going it doesn’t take much to keep it going.
It is the same way with habits. Habits are very hard to start. Forming them can be a nightmare.
The answer – DECREASE the activation energy. Make it as simple as possible to do the habit each day.
What ever you want to do: put it in your natural path. Take away all need for decision making. Make it harder NOT to do the new thing.

If you want to exercise first thing in the morning – sleep in your gym clothes.
If you want to learn to play the guitar – keep the guitar in the middle of the room where you will almost run into it every time you walk through your house.
The same is true for habits you want to STOP. Make it much much HARDER to do the thing you want to stop.
If you check your e-mail WAY too often and you want to stop – delete your shortcut, and don’t let the computer remember your password.
Make it require time, energy, and a whole lot of work to do the WRONG thing.

This chapter is genius. The entire book is good.

Having been in or directly supported quality assurance and/or manufactuirng operaitons for over 40 years, I personally feel this book ranks up there with some of Crosby's, Deming's, and Juran's work, especially in the areas of understanding fundamental concepts, functional utility and strategic accomplishment. About the Author

Larry E. Fast is a 35 year veteran of the wire and cable industry and held senior management roles for 27 of those years. At Belden, where he spent his first 25 years, he was one of the youngest Plant Managers to ever take the helm at their flagship plant in Richmond, Indiana. At that time the plant employed over 1200 people in a building of nearly 800,000 square feet. In 1982 he became the senior manufacturing leader of the Electronic Division, a position that he held for 12 years. During that time he conceived and implemented a strategy for manufacturing excellence that substantially improved manufacturing quality, service and cost. He is regarded by some as "the father of manufacturing cells" in bulk cable operations in the industry. Prior to 1987, the only known application of cell technology had been in assembly operations such as cord sets and harnesses. He later started up a new cord set division for Belden and served as the General Manager for 4 years. This experience helped to round him into a stronger manufacturing leader where his passion for excellence continued with a strong customer bias.

In 1997, he joined General Cable Corporation to lead North American Operations as a member of the Corporate Leadership Team. At that time General Cable was known more as a "marketing company" that was frequently handicapped by a grossly underperforming group of manufacturing plants. After two years learning his new company’s culture, people, product groups, systems, etc. he was named the Senior Vice President of Operations. After a 1999 aquisition he had 28 plants reporting to him as well as Corporate Sourcing, Quality, Manufacturing Systems and Advanced Manufacturing Engineering. Later as plants were consolidated to less than 20, he was given expanded responsibility for the North American Supply Chain. This included the addition of Supply Chain Planning and Logistics and three regional distribution centers in addition to the 18 manufacturing facilities in the U.S., Canada and Mexico. These plants produce a diverse range of energy, communications, industrial and specialty wire and cable products.

His vision solidified with a strategy for manufacturing excellence that was embraced by General Cable’s Leadership Team and Board of Directors in 1999. By 2001 the first General Cable plant, (Malvern, Arkansas), won Top 25 recognition as an of Industry Week magazine’s finalist for "Best Plants" in North America. By 2009, General Cable manufacturing plants had been recognized for twenty-one awards honoring nine plants―six of which were named winners of the 10 "Best Plants" in North America. Fast’s plants were the first to achieve three Top 25 awards in consecutive years and only the second company to have twice had three Top 25 winners the same year in the 20 year history of the award. As evidence of the sustainability of the process, in 2009 there were three General Cable plants in the Top 20 for the third time. Also, the very first winner, Altoona, PA in 2003, came back in their first year of eligibility to compete and win for a second time! The six "Best Plants" winners represent the successful execution of the strategy in various cultures, union and non-union plants and in all three countries. The winners are: Altoona, PA, USA in 2003; Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, Canada in 2005; Tetla, Tlaxcala, Mexico in 2006, and Indianapolis, IN, USA in 2007. Manchester, NH, USA joined this distinguished list in 2008. Altoona, PA, USA won for the second time in 2009 and Piedras Negras, Mexico joined the list of winners after having been a finalist in two prior attempts. The 2010 final results are not yet known at this writing but two plants have made the "Top 20" finalists list. They are Franklin, MA, USA for the second time and Lawrenceburg, KY, USA for the first time.

Fast holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Management and Administration from Indiana University and is a graduate from Earlham College’s Institute for Executive Growth. He also completed the Program for Management Development at the Harvard University School of Business in 1986.

Fast is a long time member of the Association for Manufacturing Excellence (AME), the Wire Association, and is a former member of the American Production and Inventory Control Society and the American Society for Quality. He also has served as a Section Chair for NEMA, the National Electrical Manufacturer’s Association. He has served on university advisory boards including Indiana University/Purdue at the I.U. East campus in Richmond, Indiana and the School of Applied Sciences at Miami University, Oxford, Ohio. From 2001 to 2007, he served on the Industry Advisory Board for the Tauber Manufacturing Institute at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. In 2009 he joined the Board of Directors, SE Region of AME. Since his retirement he has also joined the team of judges for Industry Week magazine’s "Best Plants in North America" competition.

Fast has spoken at various manufacturing excellence events such as Industry Week’s Best Plant’s Conference, Manufacturer "Live", AME Champions meeting and the international conference on Lean Manufacturing sponsored by Reliability World. He has also been published in National Productivity Review magazine for the turnaround story at Belden Wire and Cable and was featured in two October, 2006 articles in The Manufacturer and in Mexico Watch for the outstanding track record leading change at General Cable Corporation. Fast is now Founder & President of Pathways to Manufacturing Excellence, LLC, a consulting company based in Gainesville, GA.

Quick read - Very Useful

I like the book. It is a pretty quick read. The principles are well defined and I have found it useful to focus on each area using this book as a guideline.
Every once in awhile the author uses words or concepts that he assumes the reader is familiar with which had me chasing into other books but that's not really a bad thing if you are serious about this profession.
Thank you Mr. Fast for passing on a piece of your life's experiences. You have already helped me tremendously in my job.
