Chewy Food for Thought

This is an insightful look at a beloved story. As with any kind of an in-depth literary analysis, it's hard to find a definitive response. To some extent, we must always relegate our thoughts to mere speculation. I don't agree (at least at first glance) with all of the conclusions here, but they're all chewy food for thought. I definitely won't be looking at Gatsby in the same way ever again, and I appreciate having had my brain stretched.

Insightfully Challenging the Norm

It has been said that reading F. Scott Fitzgerald’s 1925 novel The Great Gatsby is a mysterious experience—something like eating a bowl of whipped cream and, once you are done, feeling totally full and satisfied. This may be due several reasons: the characters are simultaneously exaggerated and real; both the story and the situation capture an essentially American experience, one replete with longings, triumphs, and failures; and then there is, of course, the luminosity of Fitzgerald’s prose. For almost thirty years, as a student and professor of American literature, I have sought to unravel the mystery of this book and have resolved to teach it as often as possible until I get my lectures just right. This has yet to happen.
Nevertheless, Neal Abbott’s insightful examination of this most American of texts brings me closer to this gold ring: his perspicacious reading calls into question some of the most established assumptions of the story, about who killed Myrtle Wilson and even who killed Gatsby himself. Also, once he lays out his argument that Gatsby is on a grail quest, it seems so obvious that one wonders why it wasn’t seen before, let alone why it isn’t one of the more popular and established readings of the book.
Again, I have tried for many years to perfect my teaching of The Great Gatsby and, because of Mr. Abbott’s little book, I feel I am much closer to that goal.

4 "An Empire Built to Destroy Another" for the story and 4.5 Stars for the narration!

The best phrase to describe this epic saga that spans decades and transcends dozens of interconnected lives is: "Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned." Lovers of deep meticulous revenge plots will love the message of this novel. Moreover, this novel will leave you with a very strong feeling of female empowerment.

As I mostly read and listen to romance titles, I do want to note that Butterfly reads more like historical fiction (taking place in the US in the 60s/70s/80s) and women's literature than romance. However, for those romantic suspense lovers who love to dig deep into plots and character evolvement, Butterfly will satisfy the most inquisitive of minds. One additional caveat is worth mentioning. Butterfly deals with some darker subjects like physical and mental abuse, adultery, and rape. Interestingly, however, this is not a story about a BDSM club--which had been my original impression going in. Instead this is a story about how and why a very exclusive, private club where women's fantasies are catered to was built and how it affected the lives of several of its patrons.

Among the exclusive clientele of the Butterfly Club are a lawyer (Jessica), a surgeon (Linda), and a luxury pool builder (Trudie). All are extremely successful women and all have very special reasons for needing a place like Butterfly where their secret desires can be catered to or where they can be free to let go of their particular inhibitions and fears in order to experience pleasure. This story will take you through each woman's successes, quandaries, and how and why they find themselves at Butterfly as well as how Butterfly ultimately changes each.

But who built Butterfly and why? And just who is instrumental in this intricate plot and why? This is a much longer story which will take you to some heart wrenching places before ultimately vindication reigns.

Rounding out this intriguing saga is the talented narration by Laura Jennings. This was my first experience with Ms. Jennings and I was impressed. Ms. Jennings creates unique voices for each one of the many characters. Not only does she create genuine sounding female and male characters, but even within a particular gender she manages to create distinguishable differences with accents and intonations. And from her Southern accent to her Mexican American one, each renders the story that Kathryn Harvey has penned that much more tangible and real.

Ms. Jennings also pays close attention to the timing of her delivery. From the high suspense scenes to the more sensual ones, Ms. Jennings delivers each with maximum effect to heightening the particular mood being created by the book.

All in all, I highly enjoyed the suspense and detailed plot of Butterfly. This story is part of a trilogy, and I can't wait to see what new adventures await in Stars (Book 2 in the Butterfly trilogy).

Dated, Tame & Probably Edgy In the 80s But Not Now

I should begin by saying that going into this book, I thought it was published in 2005 & was a contemporary romance. As I began reading, it became evident that this was not a story in that time period. I then found it was originally published in 1988. The many references in this book definitely made sense in that context but it became a bit of a distraction because there were so many brand names mentioned that are no longer "high end" (Lear instead of Gulf Stream, Pierre Cardin, Members Only, etc) or even recognizable. Furthermore, it didn't set the time in the way a story by Bret Easton Ellis can or more to this genre Ruth Harris, it just felt like it was pushing "wealthy L.A. in the 80s" in a heavy handed way with all the name brand dropping.

I found the first chapter intro to be very compelling because you don't know who has died or who the woman who put it all into motion happens to be. I thought the mystery/revenge set up would get going much earlier on but instead we go back & forth in time getting to know the main female characters. While that was somewhat interesting, I found that it was mostly tedious because I wanted to get to the mystery. The main women we follow have all been on the rough side of relationships with men & other life circumstances but they excel in their professional lives & so seek liberation & freedom in Butterfly. I am a fan of stories of empowered women & certainly love stories where women take charge of their own happiness but none of the characters were very compelling in the long run. There was nothing new here & nothing that will stand out as revelatory or have lasting impression.

This may well have been an edgy story when it was originally published (what with women running & patronising the brothel) but by today's standard, it is quite tame. There's nothing sexually graphic or kinky here. And there's nothing wrong with that but I wouldn't even say there was anything in this book that felt like it belonged in "romance". It is a broad chick-lit ensemble where the b-story revenge plot is the most interesting thing going on (but that takes some time to get around to). Don't go into it looking for more & it should be a satisfying telling. If you're looking for a romantic & erotic story of a woman patronising a brothel, pick up Robin Schone's "The Lover".

This is definitely a book that caught my attention because of the cover & its blurb about being sensual & romantic but in the end, that's just a great marketing strategy to reissue this book to new readers hunting for a sensual, romantic read. That is fairly brilliant to sell books but it's disappointing as a reader when that's not what you get. This is the first in the Butterfly Trilogy but I don't have any desire to read the remaining installments.

Either the worst book or the GREATEST joke.

This book and all of the 4 and 5 star reviews must be a big joke; I can appreciate that enough to get over some of my anger of paying money for this. Joke's on me.

I read the first sentence, and I had a feeling I wouldn't be able to finish it. I forged on through the first page, though, at which point I knew it was nearly useless. I still wanted to finish it, so I could review it with authority. I made it 1.5 pages.

1. Horribly written. Bad grammar, misspellings and typos, sentences that make you want to grind your teeth, vague yet wordy.

2. Misinformation. In a section talking about plants: "A flower will produce either the egg or the sperm depending on the sex of the plant. Some plants will produce both, depending on their species. Yet in order to achieve conception, the plant needs to rely on other species to provide the connection between the egg and sperm."
Some flowers self-pollinate; peas, for example. The stamen and pistil are completely enclosed in the keel. I don't think I need to mention the poor usage of "egg", "sperm", "conception", or even "species".

3. Slanted, zero citation. The last paragraph is as follows, "No, in fact governments and individuals are producing energy in a more sustainable way. Most importantly, these official channels are changing their viewpoint about how the earth should be treated. It does not mean that the extinctions will stop overnight. But by creating the change we wish to see, we as individuals can have a greater impact on how the world and its organisms are cared for."

4. Not a self-study guide for biology! The chapters can be seen in the preview. Don't let the first two fool you. While you might think they will give you information about molecules and DNA, you would be mistaken. The rest goes through human organs, hormones, nervous system, brain and life cycles, including a lot of nothing in particular about puberty and menopause, and then photosynthesis, the biosphere, and mass extinction. That is mostly not information you would find in a biology class.

5. Book is technically 102 pages long. However, at page 64, there begins your special "sneak preview" of quantum physics. So... about 40% of the book is not the book.

It would be impressive if it were written by a 3rd grade child.

To say that the book is completely useless is a lie; the glossy cover would repel water nicely, so it could be used as either a head cover for rain, or a coaster. It's approximately 1/4in. thick, it might make a good furniture shim for that wobbly table/chair. And, perhaps the most bang for your buck, if you heat with wood, and I do, paper makes a great fire-starter.

I bought this through Ebay, and I didn't check any reviews first. Shame on me. Please use my mistake to your advantage; don't buy this book.

This is probably the best book for anyone who wants to have an in depth and general knowledge of Biology. It covers practically every topic one would see in a high school or college course, even going beyond that and talking in depth about other sub topics of Biology. Easy to follow, organized, and understand for anyone who is a newbie to Biology.

A Rare Kind of Excellence

Splendidly plotted and written, this is a novel for the younger reader that might well be turned away by literary agents and turned down by publishers now. It does everything the writing programmes say not to do, yet it has a rare kind of subtlety and sympathetically depicts the dilemmas of those "vexed and troubled Englishmen" who broke with the mother country. I cannot praise the novel highly enough.

To my shame I only knew this story via the Disney film. The book itself is excellent; a wonderful reading experience for young people (and not so young!) who want a sane and scholarly glimpse of life in pre-revolutionary Boston.
The amazing thing is that I and my family all knew the author's family, Esther Forbes sisters both lived in my home town. Her brother- in- law took a portrait of me as a child (and won a first prize with it!) "Johnny Tremain" is an excellent companion read for a youngster who's parent(s) are reading her magnificent work, "Paul Revere and the World He Lived In." For the larger work she received the Pulizter; for the smaller one, the Newberry Award.
I bought this book as a birthday present for my grandniece who lives near Boston and has the imagination to appreciate exploring Boston's "Freedom Trail." I think it well may be a family affair this summer!
I hope Amazon continues to carry these classics. We need them now, perhaps especially now!

Fun and exciting, but also teaches young readers.

This was an excellent book to help young readers to understand the time of the revolutionary war, but from the point of view of the people who lived at that time. It was a little slow at the start for my ten year old boy, but in the end he was very happy we read it and learned a lot about US history.
