a thoroughly modern beginner book

“Murach's Java Servlets and JSPs” third edition looks and reads like a Murach book. This is good. It's always nice when a book delivers what you are expecting. If you haven't read a Murach book before, it is a book meant for beginners. On each set of pages, the left side is text and the right is code/diagrams/references. Each chapter ends with very detailed exercises.

The book begins with the basics but doesn't limit itself to raw servlets and JSP. Chapter 1 explains how Spring and JSF fit into the picture. The book even covers JSF (but not Spring.) I wasn't expecting either to even be mentioned, so this is a nice bonus.

The book tries to cover real world concepts. There was a good bit about security including XSS and SQL injection. I would have liked other security techniques to be alluded to like CSRF. That might be too much to expect in a beginner book though. I haven't seen a beginner book cover XSS before either.

The book is up to date. It includes Java 8, HTML 5, CSS and even MVC. Any self respecting Servlet/JSP book should cover MVC of course. There were good disclaimers of when you should/shouldn't do something. Like that you shouldn't use scriptlets.

There was only one piece of advice I disagreed with in the book – using the Tomcat lib directory. I asked the author about that during the CodeRanch book promotion and he explained that he doesn't endorse that practice and will word it more clearly in the next edition. I'm satisfied with that answer. I also wish he covered tag files. Tag files rock. Minor things that I miss.

Noticing a theme? I'm happy with the book. It covers more than I expected so it whet my appetite for more. It highly recommend this book as your first Java web development book.

The perfect text for beginners

As the first to review the third addition, I would advise viewing the reviews on the second addition. Although basic in nature, this book will help a beginning web application developer understand what it takes. The format of all Murach's books are amazing, and break topics up in the perfect way. The pages on the left explain a topic. On the right, there are either code examples and/or diagrams to demonstrate. That's it! It's the perfect layout. You will retain the MOST information in the least amount of time by reading any of Murach's books. Well worth keeping on the shelf for 40 bucks.

Excellent Beginner Tutorial

Murach's Java Servlets and JSPs is an excellent tutorial introduction for people who are already familiar with Java but who are new to servlets and JSPs. The book walks you through the development of a music store e-commerce website which you can download and run. The website folllows an MVC pattern with JavaBeans as the model, JSPs as the views, and servlets as the controllers. There are actually two versions of the website: One that uses JDBC, and another that uses JPA (EclipseLink). The website is hosted and developed on a local Tomcat server, with the JavaBeans sorted in a local MySQL database. The downloadable example code is set up for NetBeans because the author feels that is a simpler IDE for new people. After you walk through the tutorial, you should be in good shape to develop using whatever IDE you prefer.

The book follows a “paired pages” format that has a figure that contains diagrams, code fragments, screenshots, and short API listings on the right page, and the explanatory text on the left page. I like this format because it works well both as a tutorial to initially earn the material, and as a reference to look up examples of how to do things later. It should also work as a good classroom teaching format, because the figures could be shown on a projector while the instructor gives the explanation and answers student questions. There are also straightforward end-of-chapter exercises that involve running and making simple modifications to different portions of the music store website code.

Lots of books strive to be a comprehensive API reference, but they don't do a very good job showing how you would design and build a complete application using the API. As a result, they end up being little more than glorified Javadoc. This book takes a completely different approach. Instead of exhaustively describing every class, interface, and method in the API, it walks the reader through a series of common tasks when developing with servlets and JSPs. These tasks include installing and configuring Tomcat and MySQL, validating forms, persisting JavaBeans, working with cookies and sessions, sending email, developing custom tags, and securing your website with passwords and SSL, as it builds up the music store website.

It is also important to understand what this book is not. The book is not a study guide for the Oracle exam on servlets and JSPs. However, if you are new to JSPs and servlets and would like to take the exam, I would recommend reading this book first. Then buy and read an exam guide because the guide will then be much more understandable. While the book contains chapters that cover barely enough basic HTML5/CSS3 and SQL to complete the examples and exercises, I would recommend another book for deeper coverage of those topics.

One downside of the book people need to be aware of is that the electronic version I received used DRM, and can't be read using a normal PDF viewer. This is a particular problem for Linux users because there is no LockLizard viewer for Linux. I ended up temporarily installing Windows, NetBeans, and MySQL to walk through the tutorials, and using a physical copy of the book to get through it. Windows and Mac users should be OK.

There are a few topics I wish the author had covered such as how to use a web form to upload files to the server as multi-part form data, using tag files, and automating the testing of your application using JUnit or TestNG. Also, it would have been better if the example code followed the Maven conventions to show how to manage the dependencies that way, and to make importing the example code into other IDE's besides NetBeans much easier.

Overall, I would recommend this book to Java developers who want to learn servlets and JSPs.

Perfect Companionship For Listening to Floyd

Storm Thorgerson is the artist who designed the bulk of Pink Floyd's artwork, and "Mind Over Matter" is a combination of memoir, scrapbook, and gallery. With the possible exception of Led Zeppelin, no British rock band of the 1970s paid closer attention than Pink Floyd to the potent magic a well-designed album cover could lend to music the album contained. Much like Zeppelin, it's almost impossible to think of Pink Floyd's music without imagining the incredible visuals on their album covers. In essence, Thorgerson is almost an adjunct member of the band.

Graphic artists will appreciate this collection because Thorgerson's almost Magritte-like graphic style is also perfectly and endlessly adaptable to the commercial marketing. Casual Floyd fans will get a kick out seeing so many classic Floyd images reproduced at much larger than CD size. More serious Floyd fans will savor Thorgerson's behind-the-scenes insights regarding the band. (I was surprised to learn that Thorgerson leans more towards Gilmour than Waters). Throughout,the author discusses his designs in a very straightforward, conversational, non-pretentious way. As a bonus, he also includes graphics from Floyd tour books, posters, and DVD clamcases.

Given that so little video footage exists of Floyd, this oversized hardcover collection provides the perfect collection of visuals to leaf through while you're listening to "Dark Side of the Moon" for the umpteenth time.

A Mindblowing Journey

What do you get when you cross art and the greatest rock band in history? A materpiece! If I had the chance, I would give this book a million stars!
Storm Thorgerson, mastermind behind most of Pink Floyd's album artwork, has compiled almost all of the rare, unusual, interesting, and familiar pieces. It also includes stories on how they (the art) came to be (which, by the way, sheds a light on the innovative genius of the band). It goes from the early years of Syd Barrett to the post-Waters era. This book is a must for any Floyd fan, especially one who is interested in the history and progress of the band.

Very good, but not a true graphic artists compilation

As a music fan, there are two things you want to add to your experience, a songlist compilation and a biography. Anything more is really too much, but in the case of groundbreaking album cover art, and knowing Pink Floyd's history of employing visual effects in their shows, a book like this is necessary, especially since albums are gone now, and the tiny graphics you get on a CD jewel case don't compare with the stuff promoters used to jam into album jackets. This book is a trip into Storm Thurgeson's head, not necessarily Floyd's. The difference is not much since Storm was a boyhood chum, and listened so well to his employer's ideas, instead of pushing his own. That's one reason the band was so successful musically as well, was Hypnosis' reliance on the members' themes. This book is not a graphic artist's design book, though I wish it were, but it would be tons bigger. It covers 30 years (and not even all the Floyd's covers (for instance, The Wall)). But you will appreciate the fact that Storm operated more under impluse as a designer than by today's modern design houses which try to render graphics in a production line style...can't be done. The author's bylines give us insight if not in technical process, then in the intellect process, and it's good fun knowing this guy was a friend to the Floyd for a LONG time, even having to uncomfortably stand in the middle of relationships for the 'Is There Anybody Out There?' live Wall issue. All in all, I'd give 5 stars for the artwork and presentation, but lose half of one for lack of technical explanation. Enjoy!

Beware: Reviews Discuss Wildly Disparate Works

The five stars are for Ovid. This note discusses the Indiana University Press edition of Rolfe Humphries' translation of the _Metamorphoses_.

Humphries provides a clear, workmanlike translation.

So far as I can tell, of all the editorial reviews and customer reviews currently (9/11/04) displayed on the page for Rolfe Humphries' translation of Ovid's _Metamorphoses_, only the customer review posted by "elemental master" clearly refers to the Humphries translation.

The _editorial_ reviews describe a Cambridge University Press _Latin_ edition containing only Book Thirteen. Humphries' translation includes all fifteen books, of course. Several customer reviews evaluate books containing translations by Dryden, Innes, and Melville. Often, it is not possible to determine which translation a reviewer is considering. The work offered for sale on the page for Rolfe Humphries' translation of Ovid's _Metamorphoses_ contains only Humphries' translation.

Superb Translation and Edition

This book is wonderful. The Rolfe Humphries is THE translation. This printing is also very nice. The paper, the type, everything makes it a good book. When you turn the page, it turns nicely and lies flat; how refreshing.

The stories of the Metamorphoses are, of course, wonderful. It's the book itself that I want to talk about.

The beautiful Waterhouse painting on the cover spans the front and part of the back covers. The line numbers at the top of each text page are those of the Latin text in the Loeb edition; how many translators would go to that kind of trouble for you? Rolfe Humphries' introduction is light, funny, and enjoyable. His love of his work shines through. The last line of his intro is, "So - here he is [Ovid], and I hope you like him."

The table of contents is annotated, making it easy to find any major story you are looking for. I also love the designs at the beginning of each book/chapter: such details enhance my enjoyment of reading this edition.

If you have never read Ovid's Metamorphoses, don't be intimidated. It is a collection of mythology stories, and you will find much that is probably familiar to you (Echo and Narcissus, Jason, Pygmalion, and more). If you are at all serious about literature, this is a basic building block in your knowledge. And even if you're not, it's just a damn good book.

The translation itself is so fluent and enjoyable. Just listen to the introduction:

My intention is to tell of bodies changed
To different forms; the gods, who made the changes,
Will help me - or so I hope - with a poem
That runs from the world's beginning to our own days.

This is exciting, eloquent stuff! Please do yourself a favor and make sure you read this at some point during your lifetime.

Things change...

Maidens become trees. Young hunks turn into flowers. Men become women; women become invincible warriors. And every time you blink, another poor wretch becomes a bird or turns to stone. In Ovid's Metamorphosis, nothing stays the same for long. A rich compendium of Greco-Roman mythology and history all ingeniously linked together by the theme of transformation, the Metamorphosis is a surprisingly sophisticated, erotic, and gory classic of ancient literature.

Rapes, murders, wars, and all manner of perversion abound. Death is lingered over with almost forensic precision. The slaughter of arrogant Niobe's fourteen children, for example, is recounted in an exhaustive detail that would do any contemporary slasher flick justice, as one by one they're picked off in various grisly ways. This is classical gore--Ovid sounding like the Clive Barker of ancient Rome as in this excerpt from the massacre of the centaurs:

[Exadius] found a weapon, a stag's antlers
Hung on a pine tree...
And Gryneus' eyes were pierced by those twin prongs,
Eyeballs gouged out; one of them stuck to the horn,
The other rolled down his beard till a blood clot caught it.

This is the sort of wonderfully nauseating detail that is repeated countless times in a masterpiece that often reads like the National Enquirer. It's hard not to believe that Ovid, like Shakespeare, was aiming his work for the mass audience of his time, which just goes to show you that the product of one age's pop culture is another's venerated classic. One only has to read Ovid's over-the-top account of the love-sick Cyclops to realize that black comedy ala the B-movies of Herschel Gordon Lewis had already been mastered some two thousand years ago.

There are a bewildering proliferation of translations of Ovid's Metamorphosis to choose from. In selecting Humphries, I chose the text that struck me as the least encumbered by the translator's attempt to distinguish himself from his rivals. Many translators feel the pressing need to do something new, and to `recast' the Metamorphosis into what they consider a facsimile of contemporary poetry. The result is all-too-often a needless accretion of unnecessary words and poetic tropes that do nothing whatsoever to enhance the text, and much towards rendering it more difficult for novelty's sake alone, and to call attention to the translator--two things a translation should avoid at all costs.

Rolf Humphries renders the Metamorphosis into a clear, straightforward English verse whose easy-going casualness facilitates readability and comprehension, as well as reflecting the apparently colloquially style of Ovid's original. And Humphries accomplishes all this without sacrificing any of the poetry--his translation is often quite beautiful, not only in its clarity and apparent simplicity, but in its adept use of language that breathes life back into this ancient work. By stepping back and lending his breath to the ancient poet, Humphries allows Ovid himself to sing again.

One of the truly seminal works of world literature, not to mention an invaluable storehouse of myths and legends, Ovid's Metamorphosis is not only must reading for any lover of great literature, but also a heck of a lot of fun.

2. Illustrated with the queries and outputs from MySQL (both Windows and Linux) so you don't get lost

3. Doesn't waste your time with necessary crap, explaining only what's important

4. The book comes with data and scripts so that you can follow along every step of the way

I am extremely happy that I learned the basic of SQL with this book. Highly recommended to those with little previous programming experience. Fast and insightful learning experience.

Quality Planning Textbook

This was a required text book for one of my business classes. It gives you a general overview of the different quality tools out there, but I honestly don't know if I could implement many of them just by reading the book. It could be written in a more engaging way, but it seems pretty par for the course as far as management text books go. I'm not sure how useful it will be once my class is done. It's densely packed with information, but at the same time it feels like I can't take that info and use it in the real world. Maybe it's more of a "me" problem than the book.

UNCOVERING THE SECRETS OF THE PAST

Riley MacPherson's family has suffered numerous losses, and the troubled history that seemingly hovers over them all is about to get a lot worse. Leaving behind her stable life in Durham, where she is a school counselor, she takes a leap into the past, returning home to New Bern after her father's death, to settle up his estate. There she finds her angry brother Danny living in his reclusive trailer in the forest, and even though she tries to reach out to him, he keeps her at arm's length.

The task of going through her father's things will be hers alone, as Danny refuses to be part of it. An old friend of her mother's, Jeannie Lyons, is an irritating addition to her life as she sorts through everything, and between Jeannie and her daughter Christine, who are readying the home for estate sales, etc., Riley feels overwhelmed and annoyed with their very presence.

But as Riley begins to search through her father's effects, more questions appear, and she begins to wonder about the family's hidden secrets and the lies that stood between her and the family she longed for. And suddenly, her connection to Jeannie changes, as more is revealed.

What is the truth behind older sister Lisa's supposed suicide? What lies under the surface of Lisa's privileged life as a music prodigy? How did their father manage to change the course of all of their lives by one series of actions? And who is Jade, living across the country in an alternate life?

Riley's story is narrated in her first person voice, in the year 2013, while Jade's narrative takes place in the 1990s, following one secret night that changed all of their lives.

How will their lives reconnect, and what threats still await them all? A wonderfully unputdownable story, The Silent Sister is a testament to the strength of family attachments in spite of the secrets that lie beneath the facades. Set in North Carolina, occasionally veering off into Virginia and then to San Diego and Seattle, I followed the characters on their journeys. I loved this story, and would recommend it for all Chamberlain fans, and for any who enjoy a good story of family secrets, lies, and deceptions. 5.0 stars.

Chamberlain's best

. FABULOUS! I have read all of Chamberlain's books. I am a voracious and eclectic reader and I must say this is one of my all-time favorites. I read It in two afternoons and only put it down to sleep. I felt very caring of Riley's predicament and was happy when she began to figure out the mysteriy she was facing. I couldn't believe that each one she solved only brought another. And some of the answers were even more confusing Wonderfully clever plotting.

I am in awe of a writer who can keep me on the edge of my seat. When I get away from the book for a meal or to sleep I can't wait to get back to it. I love learning about the things Chamberlain must learn within the scope of her books from concert violin music to trailer parks and she has such empathy toward the characters that I hardly knew who to root for.

I will recommend this book highly to my friends as well as both book clubs I belong to. ONE WARNING! You don't want to start it if you don't have the time to immerse yourself in it. I'm betting you'll have the same experience I did where the world falls away as you turn the pages. Happy reading!

Blah, Just blah

I've read some of Chamberlain's previous work, and found them to be either really good or just so-so. Sadly, this one is of the second caliber. While Riley is a likeable character, the plot is weak and predictable, and the sister wasn't worth the trouble. I didn't even care what her story was, and found it tough to even finish the story. Try some of her other works, there are better ones to be sure.
