So Much Fun, Makes a Great Gift for Older Grade-Schoolers

I bought this gift originally for my son, who was in fourth grade at the time. He absolutely loved it, and still reads through it all the time even a year later. He loved this book so much that I started buying it for birthday gifts for the other boys his age, and they've all absolutely loved it too. I know because I hear them talking about it, discussing the fun, jokey things the book contains.

I think I've bought about five of these so far, and I've been glad I did. There's also a sequel to this book that was also a big hit with my son and his friends.

Slightly regrettable

My daughter bought this for a friend for her birthday, and when we saw one at a local bookstore, I made the mistake of purchasing it without looking through it much. My ten year old daughter and her friends love it, but I have to warn other parents and nearby adults: it can be incredibly irritating. It's full of pranks and gross things kids love, and random facts. Just overall a fun kids' book, but as an adult who has been hearing about its content for months on end, I wish I'd distracted her and bought something else instead!

Be a Grounded Male, then Take Action

Great book to help guys out. First part is talking about being a "grounded male," which essentially means having a purpose and vision for your life. Girls don't want a guy who just messes around. Finding your purpose though, isn't an easy thing to do, and it's not something you will just develop. This book is saying that if you're a failure or success it doesn't matter, girls just want to see the drive.

2nd part is basically saying, take action. It talks about the idea of just walking up to a girl without a script and saying, "Hi, I'm ____, I want to get to know you." This is good advice, versus the scores of gurus with "opening routines." Girls can see past that and it's annoying. Do you really want to know her sign? Or is it just so you can get her talking? (Neil Strauss profiles "chick crack" in his book The Game.) So taking action is the most important thing, and Andrew provides a clear roadmap for this. Once you start, you may not be good at pickup/dating, but do it consistently over 3 months, 6 months, 24 months, you'll become a star because you'll understand what works for you.

A few things though, the marketing says, "$10 to finding your dream girl." I understand this, but just because you buy this book doesn't definitely mean you will find your dream girl, and there's no time frame specified. You still have to take action, deal with failure and rejection, and maybe you will find your true love one day. So, it's not that simple just by buying a book you'll find your dream girl.

A few grammar errors as well, and after every chapter you are prompted to sign up for a program, etc. I get that he's trying to promote his programs but if this were a physical book, it would seem more like a sales pitch than a book. Maybe people are okay with it because it's a Kindle version.

A big part of finding a woman is being yourself. There are many tips and tricks in here to go out with a woman, but at the end of the day, it comes down to be genuine and vulnerable. If you're just reading off a playbook every time you want to go out with someone, you're not being as genuine as you can be since you're just following instruction. LeBron doesn't follow an exact playbook when he steps on the court, because if he did then his talents would be washed away by rules.

So the more you go out, the more you will develop your swag, but don't forget to treat dating as a genuine, interpersonal experience, not like a checklist of things that you did or haven't done to get a girl into bed, or to find your "dream girl."

A curious blend of practical and idealistic

David Deida meets RSD principles in Ferebee's seminal piece. I found the most value in the latter two thirds of the book which covers the practicalities from approach/talking to women, to logistics/texting, to the bedroom, to being in a relationship.

The book is very ambitious and tries to cover almost the entire gamut of dating issues including mindsets, values, philosophies etc. and as a consequence not every area gets as much depth and attention as some readers may like. On the other hand, the book manages to cover a lot of ground given its size, and goes far to demystify dating as a whole.

As his first book, I feel that Andrew's 'writer's voice' is still maturing; bookwriting is an art form that requires some experience to get some of the nuances mastered – and these are different from blogging. This doesn't however, detract from his message which comes across as authentic and to the point. I think this is where his real strength is; finding the motivational crux of key life issues, such as 'if you don't pursue your dreams and ambitions, the time will pass anyway, or that our fears, insecurities and things we let hold us back, pale in the face of death' – he doesn't directly say these things in the book, but they're themes I've heard him talk about before in his videos, and I admire the way he delivers them with conviction and congruence. The 'writer's voice' isn't really an issue during the practical elements of the books, and perhaps I'm being overly pedantic, as I can see from other reviews that many have been inspired by the writing. When it comes to the big idea stuff of the book however, such as what it means to be a 'Grounded Man', I feel that if Andrew can convey such ideas in future writing/wordsmanship with the conviction and congruence he conveys in his videos, he'll move from competence to mastery as a writer.

About the Author
Jan Zuijdijk has been active in motorsports as suspension engineer and designer of damping systems for over 45 years, specializing in gas hydraulic damping and vehicle dynamics as applied to race cars in a diversified field. His career started at Koni in Holland in 1960 in Research and development and was soon a regular suspension engineer on the Formula One and international racing series providing set up service to the teams. Jan Zuijdijk together with the late Henk Richten, service manager at Koni Holland, designed and pioneered a new revolutionair damper design of which the damping forces could be adjusted without taking the damper of the car. After the new design damper was tested on the Ferrari prototype sports cars at the Nurburgring, the Formula One teams of Lotus, Tyrrell, Brabham, Surtees and other teams started using the new damper designed by Zuijdijk and Richten. Zuijdijk worked within the research department on a Koni Gas hydraulic Self Leveling Suspension system for the Porsche 911 and Ferrari 365 2+2 especial tuning the ride and handling of the system. The Leveling system using suspension movement to activate the pump action providing lift to carry the variable weight of the car. In 1972, Jan Zuijdijk moved to the United States of America working with the Koni importer in the function of Chief Engineer and became directly involved with the American Racing series of which there are many and diverse series, soon the Zuijdijk prepared Koni dampers dominated the Indy car series. In 1978, Zuijdijk accepted the function of Director of Engineering and Racing services, responsible for product development for the North American and Canadian market, organizing racing service throughout the country at Koni America in Culpeper V.A. In 1988, Zuijdijk resigned from Koni and continued to work as consultant to racing teams in the USA. In 1989, He worked with the Patrick racing team, designing suspension components

Lacking Substance

I was expecting a lot more from this book and was sorely disappointed by it.

Given that the author has so much expertise in the field, I was hoping for some concrete examples, more information on actual settings to use, more in-depth troubleshooting tips, some practical real World setup information and there was almost none. What there WAS, was some technical insight into how dampers work, the history of their development, some personal anecdotes from the author, but almost nothing that could be of value to anyone looking for help on how to set up their suspension and dampers etc.

As the other review says, I am appalled by the complete lack of proofreading that went into this book. The number of misspellings, typographical errors, grammatical slip-ups and overall lack of attention to detail is unforgivable. The publisher really needs to hire someone that understands the concept of proofreading, syntax, spelling and English grammar, because this is by FAR the worst book I have ever read in that regard.

Overall, definitely NOT recommended unless you are more interested in a lightweight history of the damper than you are in the everyday practical setup of your suspension and handling.

Good information, poorly presented

Parts of this big are definitely worth reading, and other parts are worth skipping over. Jan clearly (repetitively) states his philosophy on damper tuning but does not prove it sufficiently. I believe in his philosophy, based on my own experience, but I expected more calculations from him to complete his teachings (preferably clearly laid out). I would say that you need a basic understanding of the effects of damping in vehicle dynamics to catch Jan's train of thought, so it's not a book for beginners, even if complex formulas and calculations are not present.

I did find it hard to read as it appears that no one has proof read it, and his english is generally bad. But, he's Dutch and it's to our advantage that he has chosen to share his experiences in English, so I can accept his efforts. The language becomes much more acceptable when the text switches from technical description to anecdotes - it brings his personality out.

I will probably not read this book twice, but I am glad that I have read it once.

Zuijdijk reveals the truth about racing dampers.

Jan Zuijdijk is the expert in this field. He reveals a lot of his experience working in racing dampers which contradicts to what people has believed for ages. The book explains the working principles of dampers, i.e. twin-tube, mono-tube, mono-tube with sub-tank, mono-tube with sub-tank and compresion valving, and their adjustables to improve the handling of the race cars. This could be the first book to my knowledge to explain about the importance of bump damping which has the greater effect in handling than rebound damping. Additionally, the gas adjusting is also explained in both principle and application.

The downsides of the book are:
1. It has some repetition from chapter to chapter.
2. The dynamometer graphs and dampers illustrations are not clear, especailly the graph from damper dynamometer.
3. There are so many English mistyping, almost every page. Someone should have proof-read before it was published.

Apart from those downsides, I would give 5 stars in this book.

Emphazises on a child-centered clinical approach

When I was undertaking Pediatrics rotation during my junior clerkship, I noticed that our Faculty staff was using this handbook, so I was wondering (what is so special about it?) Then I decided to buy it in a Book Exhibition, and discovered the reason later!
This handbook stresses on the development of communication, observational and instincual skills. The approach is essentially clinical i.e. confined largely to symptoms and signs.
The used language is very simple, and the handbook uses numerous graphs, funny pictures, and boxes containing special pediatric terminology with which the student may experience difficulty.
The first few chapters use a child-centered clinical approach towards problem solving in pediatrics.
There are 11 chapters: Introduction, History taking, Approaching children, Examination at different ages, Systems examination, A measure of progress, Hydration and nutrition, Development assessment, Examining excreta, Using your senses, Pediatric tips and topics.
The last chapter (Pediatric tips and topics) is very attractive and contains very useful information. It covers (Normal findings, Tools of the trades, Tricks of the trade, Biological warning signs, Clinical curios, Rules of thumb, Maternal myths, Acrimonious acronyms, A-Z eponyms, Alarm signals, Memorable mnemonics, and others ...)
This handbook comes in 251 pages, and the last edition was the 3rd (1998).
I strongly advise you to buy and read it when you have a free time in the ward.

Good complement to any textbook

Gill and O'Brien's book is a useful little complement to any larger paediatric textbook. It makes the salient point which medical students always forget - it's no use knowing the genetics of ultra-rare syndromes when you don't know the basics of paediatrics, and the most important way to learn is examine lots and lots of children.

One Diet Does Not Fit All--Although Great Portion Control!

Sears' premise is a relatively easy one to understand: eating protein with every meal helps to regulate your insulin output and hence helps the body avoid a constant craving for fattening carbohydrate intake.

I purchased this book when it first came out in 1995, used it on and off with adequate results, and was dismayed when various news magazines and dieticians panned the premise. I thought, how could regulating hormones NOT be involved in the dieting puzzle?

Recently I was reaquainted with Sears' ideas after seeing an alternative physician in my quest for better health. The doctor recommended using Sears hormone-regulating formula and portion guidelines with Peter D'Adamo's ER4YT Blood Type Diet. So far, I have had fairly good overall health-benefit results--and this with no intention of losing weight--although this has occurred.

Although Sears comes off as being a little too commercial for my taste--just check out the Zoneperfect website and you will be bombarded with all sorts of prepackaged goodies--- his premise of eating a certain amount and a certain combination of the three basic nutritional elements seems to be quite wise. In a nutshell, one's hand is utilized to decide just how much one needs to put away during one meal. The protein should be the size of one's palm--thickness taken into account. The fat is represented by the size of the fleshy part of the thumb--about a tablespoon. Carbohydrates are monitored in this way: if eating a grain, a closed fist-sized amount should be consumed. If eating a green vegetable, two handfuls are advised.
As much as I find this advice feasible, I have some criticism with regard to Sears' premise and format. Firstly most of the recipes in the book seemed to be geared for bachelors who have little time for food preparation. Anyone wanting to make a Zone meal for a family would be pretty much out of luck if using the book as a guideline. The good news here is that the website provides many many recipes to help balance out those fats, proteins and carbs and there is an Excel based tool offered online at no-cost which actually calculates a meal's components down to the gram---if you want to get that specific. Secondly, Sears reports that one could lose weight with any combination, although he suggests for example that red meat and butter are poor choices when compared to other protein and fat choices. I believe that since this book has been written,Sears has come out with other "breakthrough" diets--one revolving around soy and one around Omega-3 fats. I can only charitably think that as his theories evolve more books will ensue. But, what he doesn't seem to cover is the fact that some people simply do not do well when eating certain foods. His one-size fits all diet, does not work for everyone. There is a dieting stall reached after awhile and the optimum results that he proports one will achieve are not achieved. Case in point, when I started the Zone vigorously, 3 years ago, I found that I had to incorporate more protein with every meal. I turned to dairy as I did not feel inclined to cook a chicken breast each and every time I wanted a snack. Unfortunately, no matter what Sears says, I do not metabolize dairy well and I found that no matter how many glasses of water I drank, no matter how many fish oil capsules I consummed, or how simple and abundant my carbohydrates were, I was still constipated. After adding a fiber supplement, I found I no longer lost weight--but stayed at a plateau for so long a period of time, I eventually tried another dieting plan. After all, no one feels well if their digestive system is no working correctly. Sears speaks of the digetive hormones, but he neglects to mention the changing hormonal interplay of estrogen and progesterone in women, especially as they get older. Nevertheless, I believe that Sears book can be the cornerstone for many who do not understand that food must be balanced to achieve a hormonally balanced body. In the same sense, in order to be a certain size, you must eat a certain amount. My advise is to use this as your springboard, then decide which combinations work best for you, perhaps, as my physician advised,try the D'Adamo blood type diet as a guideline for foods one should and shouldn't eat. I have found that since doing this, I no longer need my fiber supplement, I have lost weight, I do feel better. It worked for me.

I read 'The Zone' and followed what he said. I lost 20 pounds in less than 3 months and have maintained my weight for 1 month. My biggest surprise was the outstanding decrease in my cholesterol/HDL ratio, tested through work. My ratio dropped from 6.24 to 3.2 in 4 months (doctors want it less than 4.0). I eat like he says and exercise like he says, except I do eat ice cream at night frequently. I try to ride a stationary bike every 3 or 4 days. I do not feel I am dieting. I used to have orange juice and bananas for breakfast and was hungry before 11 am. Now I have 10 ounces of 1% milk, 1 oz peanuts, 1 oz cheese and crackers and eat lunch 45 minutes later than I used to. Peanuts remain in the stomach a long time and the fat content satisfies me. Instead of potatoes, I have broccoli, cauliflower, or green beans. I've talked enough. It worked for me. Good luck to you.

This diet works!

I recently got this book and have now read through it. As I read, it was very familiar to me! This is the diet that Bill Phillips recommends in his wildly popular Body for Life program which I followed several years ago with great results.

The Zone was created before Bill Phillips wrote his book, so Bill "borrowed" his recommendations from Dr. Sears!

My experience with The Zone is based on what I learned from Bill Phillips. However, The Zone has a much more thorough explanation and better guidelines for following the program. I would recommend using both Body for Life and The Zone to get the best results.

Here are some observations based on my experience with this program:

1) As with any diet, it only works if you follow it.

2) It can be followed with good results by using the palm of you hand to gauge portions as explained by Dr. Sears (and by Bill Phillips). Or you can follow it exactly with food scales and exact food selection for the best results.

3) If you are following it properly and consuming the right amounts of food, you will not get hungry. If you get hungry, you either had too much carbohydrate at the last meal or your protein portion sizes are not large enough.

4) You will get excellent results if this is combined with weight and cardio training as prescribed by Bill Phillips. Be sure to increase the protein amounts according to your increased activity level.

5) In addition to weight loss, you will gain massive amounts of energy and a solid feeling of well-being.

My son loves these books!!

My son loves these books!! There are about 10 books in the series, and my son was missing 3 of those books, so I bought him the 3 he didn't have to complete his set. The pricing here is really good too for a brand new book. It almost cost the same as going to one of our local used book stores. It's so much nice to pay the same price for a brand new book. My son, loves the story line in each book, and has even tried writing his own version of a diary book! My son is 11, but has been reading these books when he was 8, and even met Jeff Kinney at a book signing! These books are great, wholesome, excellent books, and really appeals to kids of all ages!

Another great book from an amazing author!

My son has read this book over and over again. The Diary of a Wimpy Kid book series has become increasingly popular in my area. Every time a new book is released by Jeff Kinney, the students at my son's school are on a race to get it. I was able to purchase this book from this seller much cheaper than if I had purchased at a retail store. I would definitely buy again.

Laugh Out Loud Funny!

"Pack your bags. We're going on a road trip."

Thus begins the 9th book in the Wimpy Kid series. I have a feeling I know what you're thinking. Another Wimpy Kid book? Who wants to read more about the selfish brat also know as Greg Heffley? I mean, let's face it, he isn't the best role model (or even close for that matter). I've cringed many times while reading these books with my son; the way Greg treats his supposed best friend Rowley or the way Rodrick treats Greg. Please, even my kids treat each other better than this (which is a good thing). Of course, my son and I have spoken about Greg's behavior and how he isn't nice to Rowley and only uses him to get what he wants. And I don't deny my son the chance to read something he really enjoys. Anything you read is a chance to learn something, even if the book just teaches you to recognize bad behavior.

So, I was hugely surprised to find myself laughing out loud while reading this book to my son. Rowley is absent from this book and I think that helped. The book focuses entirely on Greg and his family and their misadventures. Greg's mom decides that a road trip is an excellent way to bring the family together. It doesn't exactly turn out as she expected, but they still manage to have quite the adventure.

I don't want to give anything away, but there is a piglet, crazy seagulls, a water park adventure and many funny driving and motel scenes that many of us can relate to. How many of us have been on a family trip and Dad has to take a work call. Everyone in the car is supposed to be quiet.... Very funny scene!!

Recommended to:
Any fans of the Wimpy Kid series and even some people who aren't fans. If you like funny family stories where everything that can go wrong does, you will enjoy this book. Think (totally PG) book version of one of the Vacation movies.
