This text looks at both sides of the issue: bullying and being bullied. Readers will consider how it feels to be made fun of, what to do if they or those they know are being hurt by someone's words, and how to talk to themselves about words people may say about them. The cartoonlike illustrations are a good fit for the book's intended audience, clearly showing typical settings and situations and the emotional reactions of those people the "ouch" words are inflicted on. An extensive note to parents provides more insight into microaggressions and how they are aimed toward marginalized groups, a practice continuing into adulthood. There is potential here for meaningful parent-child discussions and for kids and adults to examine their own actions and reactions in these moments. This title is reminiscent of the American Girl self-help books in tone, but for a younger audience. VERDICT People of all ages can learn and grow from the message of this offering. About the Author
Michael Genhart, PhD, is a licensed clinical psychologist in private practice in San Francisco and Mill Valley, California. He lives with his family in Marin County. He received his BA in psychology from the University of California, San Diego and his PhD from the University of Maryland, College Park. This is his first children's book. Viviana Garofoli was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, where she currently lives with her husband, Sergio, and two daughters, April and Emma. As a child, her favorite pastime was playing with her watercolors and crayons on big sheets of paper; if asked what she wanted to be when she grew up, Viviana would immediately reply, "a painter." In 1995, she graduated from Escuela Nacional de Bellas Artes Prilidiano Pueyrredon with a degree in fine arts. Over the last 15 years, she has illustrated more than 20 children's books and contributed many editorial and textbook illustrations in Argentina and Puerto Rico. In her spare time, Viviana enjoys working in her garden, tending to her orchids.

Must-have book on micro-aggression for families and educators

Must-have book for every child and his/her parent, and for educators. It will likely trigger a childhood memory of your own, when someone spoke hurtful words to you that you still remember and feel. That's when you'll understand the power of Michael Genhart's book. Colorful. Great analysis/coaching in the back by Kevin Nadal.

“You throw like a girl…

Ouch Moments, written by Dr. Michael Genhart and featuring the emotional clarity of Viviana Garofoli’s illustrations, helps children understand and explore the critically important topic of microaggressions. Microaggressions are subtle, insidious forms of negative treatment and discrimination. They are words and behaviors that all too often are considered to be harmless, to the point where even adult observers may say the object of the microaggression is being too sensitive and should “get over it” (e.g., “You throw like a girl….”). And acceptance of microaggressions begins in childhood. Fortunately, it is increasingly well understood that these behaviors have very harmful consequences. In a concise work, Dr. Genhart introduces readers to the topic, first and foremost empowering readers to recognize without shame and avoid their own microaggressive behaviors. Gently and effectively, he then encourages readers to assume shared responsibility for noticing and helping to address microaggressions committed by others. The book concludes with a similarly concise and useful teacher’s guide. Ouch Moments can be readily understood by children who read it on their own, and it can serve as a tool with which teachers and parents can engage children in conversation. This important book arguably is as informative for adults as it is for children, informative for adults whether or not they have children under their care.

This is a beautiful and important book

This is a beautiful and important book. Dr. Genhart writes with compassion and sensitivity as he takes on the topic of micro aggressions--rapid, often subtle, insults or criticisms directed at individuals who are seen as different. Parents and educators will welcome "Ouch Moments" as a gentle way to teach children that ugly words hurt others, and that there's plenty that they can do to help themselves or other children when they've been hurt. Viviana Garofoli's illustrations beautifully convey the impact, both positive and negative, that children can have on one another. Dr. Genhart's words and Ms. Garofoli's pictures show us how even young children can begin to change our culture so that all of us feel included.
