About the Author
John Rosemond is a family psychologist who has directed mental-health programs and been in full-time private practice working with families and children. Since 1990, he has devoted his time to speaking and writing. Rosemond’s weekly syndicated parenting column now appears in some 250 newspapers, and he has written 15 best-selling books on parenting and the family. He is one of the busiest and most popular speakers in the field, giving more than 200 talks a year to parent and professional groups nationwide. He and his wife of 39 years, Willie, have two grown children and six well-behaved grandchildren.

Good, with some caveats

I wanted to rate this 3.5 stars

This book will probably work well for you if you are the typical parent whose kids have too many "privileges" such as their own TV, own phone, own computer, lots of social time with friends, etc. to take away and restore, which is probably why your children are having homework problems in the first place.

On the other hand, if your homework-challenged child does not have a lot in terms of things to take away, this book doesn't offer much in terms of remedies. Not every parent wishes to or can afford to give their child a computer, or a TV--or maybe the child is a voracious reader and could care less about being confined to quarters. Are you going to take away all of a child's books for failing to do homework (much of which is pointless anyway, to be honest here, and smart children know this)? Somehow I doubt it.

As to his checklists that he wants the teacher to sign off on, well, good luck. Not only do teachers have more and more admin work these days, the schools in many cases are trying to push the daily signing off nonsense onto the parents with those unnecessary student planners. Either the work is done, or it isn't. Daily check-off sheets are just an annoyance to the adults who have to deal with them.

What is most valuable about this book, is the way he explains how the responsibility for homework completion should be on the child, and that it is not your job to be teaching concepts, helping with homework and signing off on checklists.

Unfortunately, the schools have brainwashed parents into actually doing homework and projects with and for their children under the guise of "being involved" --to the point of textbooks and worksheets assigning homework telling parents to do flashcard practice, or other drill work!!

These days, you really have to stand firm when you tell the teacher (at the beginning of the school year) that you expect your child to be assigned homework that does NOT involve you (other than perhaps to purchase needed supplies or drive to the library), and that you expect your child to be graded accordingly because he/she is doing his/her own work. Yes, you are an interested parent, you go to the Open Houses and Parent Conferences, but you are firm in your resolve that school is your child's responsibility, or "job", if you'd like to think of it in those terms.

I feel this book needs to be revised somewhat (it is from the early '90s), because he does not address how bad this shoving off of responsibility from the teacher/school to the parent has become of late.

common sense help

I bought and read this after a kindergarten teacher friend of mine told me about it. I now have bought several copies, and have given them away. This is a book any parent can benefit from, but I think if you have young children it is the most helpful.

Great - Much to My Surprise

My wife picked this book up somewhere, but I was the first to read it. I wasn't optimistic. It starts out great, describing the problem(s) that many parents have, and describing the way things should be. Fine! But how do I go from here to there? Well, he tells you. And whereas his basic method(s) don't necessarily work with all kids, they work great with our main problem kid (6th grade).
In a nutshell, his teachers sign off on a checklist each day indicating whether or not his did all his homework, behaved, and completed his seatwork. It's his job to get the sign off. Any No's, and his loses priviledges (TV, phone, computer) for the evening. No's on as many as 3 days in a week means he loses priviledges for the week-end as well. If he get's all Yes's, then he has his priviledges, and we in no way bug him about homework. All we care about is the daily checklist. No excuses are accepted.
This kid never seemed to care what grades he got, and 'lost' or 'forgot' homework all the time. We wasted way to much effort trying to get him to behave responsibly. And all we had to do was put together a form, discuss the new rules with him, and talk to his teachers about it. It has worked great and his teachers are thrilled with his turnaround: not just on his homework but on his attitude and behavior.
My only gripe with the book is that the author, while giving lip service to the fact that there are as many kids that are below average as there are above average, nevertheless used almost exclusively examples of kids who basic IQ is well above average.

The return of Supahead

Here's the problem with writing a revealing autobiography -- you have no material left for the inevitable sequel.

But that's only one of the many problems with "The Vixen Diaries," a flaccid recounting of Karrine "Supahead" Steffans' sex life and career in the year of 2006. When she's not posing, preening and preaching, Steffans is racing from one one worthless fling to another.

Much of the book is a celebration of how her life has changed since the publication of "Confessions of a Video Vixen" -- she now has money, notoriety, celebrity friends, a nice home, new ultramegaexpensive cars whenever she damages one (which seems to be frequently), and enough financial room that she can make a habit of club-hopping through L.A.

This is where reality starts fuzzing out, because apparently her small amount of fame (or infamy) has gone to Steffans' head. Suddenly she's no longer a damaged hip-hop groupie/video girl who exchanged sex for money, but a "an author" who writes "internationally bestselling nonfiction" with a "message." Oh yes, and if you disapprove of her, you're obviously a chauvinist.

But this book isn't just about Steffans' success with the last one -- it's also about men. Ray J, Eric Benet, a strung-out Bobby Brown, Mike Tyson, Magic Johnson, the Icon, and her ex-boyfriend Bill Maher -- whom Steffans rhapsodizes about until I got the squirmy feeling that I was seeing a woman beg. Not pretty.

One of the most hilarious lines of the entire book is: "... some people can't seem to get over my past -- the partying, the relationships, the sex..." This, of course, coming from a woman whose "internationally bestselling nonfiction" was all about sex with rappers.

It's a pretty funny pronouncement from someone who poses like a porn star on the cover, and revels in the fame her sex-drugs-hip-hop book has brought her. No matter how many times she says she loves staying at home, puts her son first, et cetera... what really stands out is the amount of time she spends chasing men and partying. It leaves you feeling sorry for her kid, who watches his mother bounding desperately after one man after another.

Despite her tepid, gossipy prose, Steffans does manage some stirring moments -- the painful account of grandfather's death is quite touching, and her encounter with Jamie Foxx shows what a pleasant guy he is. But these are only a few moments in a paper-thin narrative, dominated by a schizophrenic carousel of men who are married, creepy, wounded or strung-out -- all of whom she claims to "love."

Aside from her disdain for LA, there's little that's new here. The thin book is padded with pompous ponderings about Hollywood, homosexuality, relationships, marriage, double standards, being a parent and the woes of being rich'n'famous. Insightful, they ain't. One interlude -- where she scratches a Mercedes and goes screeching to the dealership for a new one -- is absolutely painful.

And though she piously outpreaches a hypocritical minister, Steffans comes across as a pretty nasty piece of work herself. She drips scorn on her lovers' wives, on a publicist who does not recognize her as a "celebrity," and even calls Bobby Brown to gleefully tell him that his ex-wife is now having sex with Karrine's ex-boyfriend. How mature.

The nastiness climaxes in the final pages, where she writes a drippy, sexual letter to her married lover, "Papa." But she reveals his name this time -- how wonderfully classy of her.

"The Vixen Diaries" is a tedious, trashy trip through the ego of Karrine Steffans, who apparently thinks that recounting sex with rappers makes her a Great Artist. Ultimately, it makes her a walking headache.

Could I get a refund or Karri loves Bill

This is the biggest waste of money. The Vixen had to have written this in one morning, because it only took me two hours on a Saturday morning to complete this work. All she did was talk about Bobby, Ray J and Bill. How pathetic. She is practically begging Bill to marry her, throughout the book. This is a plot or we are being "punked". She has no pride, but wants to be seen as respectable. And papa??? Method Man??? Please. His wife has cancer so I suppose she felt she could reveal him. This book reads like the diary I kept when I was 10 years: juvenile and redundant.

Where do I begin? Now I never hated Karrine before, she is not the first nor last woman in this world that got ahead by using sex. And really, I pegged her last book as a growing and learning experience.
However, this book is really sad. And like many of the other reviewers I don't believe she has grown at all. Maybe she has seen an increase in her own personal strength. But her morals are going down the drain by the day.
She relies on men to make her feel good and to bring her from one bad experience to next. She doesn't care if they're married, involved, or too young (in the book she talks about if the public knew the identity of one of her conquest we would label her a predator).
Not only does she not feel sorry or remorse for the relationships that she helps to destroy, but she has no problem putting it in ink so that wives can have their betrayal on record forever.
Of every single man (or boy!) that she writes about in this book she says something like "we will always be connected" "we have something no one else understands" "we share a love that can not be broken" "you will always have a part of me". By the end of the book I'm like there isn't a part of you left.
She has no idea how to let go of the past. And she has a false belief that all of these men are somewhere off pining for her and reminiscing on their torrid rendezvous, the way she is.
I feel a little embarrassed for Bill Maher who probably has had people walk up to him saying sorry for the way karrine put in detail how she cheated on you with method man.
It amazes me how she can wonder why she is not happy or settled down yet. What goes around always comes back around. And she has a lot to reap.

A WONDERFUL ASSORTMENT OF ANZALDUÁ’S PROSE AND POETRY

Gloria Anzaldúa (1942-2004) also wrote/edited This Bridge Called My Back: Writings by Radical Women of Color, This Bridge We Call Home: Radical Visions for Transformation, Interviews/Entrevistas, Making Face, Making Soul/Haciendo Caras: Creative and Critical Perspectives by Feminists of Color, The Reader, etc.

She wrote in the Preface to this 1987 book, “The psychological borderlands, the sexual borderlands and the spiritual borderlands are not particular to the Southwest. In fact, the borderlands are physically present wherever two or more cultures edge each other, where people of different races occupy the same territory, where under, lower, middle and upper classes touch, where the space between two individuals shrinks with intimacy. I am a border woman. I grew up between two cultures, the Mexican (with a heavy Indian influence) and the Anglo (as a member of a colonized people in our own territory). I have been straddling that… border, and others, all my life. It’s not a comfortable territory to live in, this place of contradictions. Hatred, anger, and exploitation are the prominent features of this landscape…

“This book, then, speaks of my existence. My preoccupations with the inner life of the Self, and with the struggle of the Self amidst adversity and violation; with the confluence of primordial images; with the unique positionings consciousness takes at these confluent streams, and with my almost instinctive urge to communicate, to speak, to write about life on the borders, life in the shadows. Books saved my sanity, knowledge opened the locked places in me and taught me how to survive and then how to soar… and words, my passion for the daily struggle to render them concrete in the world and on paper, to render them flesh, keeps me alive. The switching of ‘codes’ in this book from English to Castillian Spanish to the North Mexican dialect to Tex-Mex to a sprinkling of Nahuatl to a mixture of all of these, reflects my language, a new language---the language of the Borderlands. There, at the juncture of cultures, languages cross-pollinate and are revitalized; they die and are born.”

She observes, “Culture forms our beliefs. We perceive the version of reality that it communicates. Dominant paradigms, predefined concepts that exist as unquestionable, unchallengeable, are transmitted to us through the culture. Culture is made by those in power---men. Males make the rules and laws; women transmit them… The culture expects women to show greater acceptance of, and commitment to, the value system than men. The culture and the Church insist that women are subservient to males… For a woman of my culture there used to be only three directions she could turn: to the Church as a nun, to the streets as a prostitute, or to the home as a mother. Today some of us have a fourth choice: entering the world by way of education and career and becoming self-autonomous persons. A very few of us.” (Pg. 16-17)

She suggests, “Today, la Virgen de Guadalupe is the single most potent religious, political and cultural image of the Chicanlo/mexicano. She, like my race, is a synthesis of the old world and the new, of the religion and culture of the two races in our psyche, the conquerors and the conquered. She is the symbol of the mestizo true to his or her Indian values… Because Guadalupe took upon herself the psychological and physical devastation of the conquered and oppressed indio, she is our spiritual, political and psychological symbol… Guadalupe unites people of different races, religions, languages: Chicano Protestants, American Indians and whites…” (Pg. 30)

She explains, “So, if you really want to hurt me, talk badly about my language. Ethnic identity is twin skin to linguistic identity---I am my language. Until I can take pride in my language, I cannot take pride in myself. Until I can accept as legitimate Chicano Texas Spanish, Tex-Mes and all the other languages I speak, I cannot accept the legitimacy of myself. Until I am free to write bilingually and to switch codes without having always to translate while I still have to speak English or Spanish when I would rather speak Spanglish, and as long as I have to accommodate the English speakers rather than having them accommodate me, my tongue will be illegitimate. I will no longer be made to feel ashamed of existing. I will have my voice; Indian, Spanish, white. I will have my serpent’s tongue---my woman’s voice, my sexual voice, my poet’s voice. I will overcome the tradition of silence.” (Pg. 59)

She states, “The Writing is my whole life, it is my obsession. This vampire which is my talent does not suffer other suitors. Daily I court it, offer my neck to its teeth. This is the sacrifice which the act of creation requires, a blood sacrifice. For only through the body, through the pulling of flesh, can the human soul be transformed. And for images, words, stories to have this transformative power, they must arise from the human body---flesh and bone---and from the Earth’s body---stone, sky, liquid, soil. This work, these images, piercing tongue or ear lobes with cactus needle, are my offerings, are my Aztecan blood sacrifices.” (Pg. 75)

This book contains some of Anzaldúa’s most pointed and passionate writing. It will be great interest to those who already love her writings, or as an excellent introduction to her for those who don’t.

I hate to be harsh

I'm sorry man, but I guess the cover should have given it away. "Thier way of life"? It is very difficult to read because of all of the typos, misused punctuation , run on sentences, and misspellings. I suggest you have someone edit it for you and publish a revised edition. I hate to be harsh, because I know you put a lot of time and effort into this, but have another set of eyes review it for you. I think you have a story to tell.

People need to know the truth.

Thank you for taking the time to write your book. You are very fortunate to be chosen by Kochi to enlighten folks about the true nature of the forest people. Sorry you and Violet had to go through so much and be taken advantage of. No wonder Kochi didn't care for that parasitic woman who latched on to you. So glad you escaped and are doing better. Please continue to write more books and thank you for caring about the forest people.

He primarily focuses on creatively sharing his journey, lessons and mistakes he made as he walked into manhood and into love.
