"Now more than ever..."

Brilliant satire. This is the only book that has ever made me laugh at loud. But it's not all humour. It's also intelligent and shocking. In the throes of a sexual revolution but hung up on political correctness, the world Richler describes seems eerily close to the western society of today, in which Aguilera can sing about getting "dirrrrty" on a Saturday morning kids' show while race and religion are untouchable fodder(unless of course you ridicule white men and their Christianity). It is very thought provoking to say the least. I still consider myself an open-minded left-winger but Richler challenged me to decide how liberal my views are or should be. And the book also gives a warning about how far we should let things go before we decide good taste has been breached. Richler doesn't come right out and say what his views are but deciphering them is half the fun of this clever read.

Brilliant or Just Crazy: You Decide!

This is a very unusual book and I would compare it with Anthony Burgess's Clockwork Orange or Orwell's 1984 or a some similar book. It is not a classic and it is not as good as either of those two books but that is the type of book that Richler has written: it is experimental or on the "acceptable edge" of writing.

By the way, this is a book that Anthony Burgess liked, and interestingly or as a bit of trivia he wrote positive comments about Cocksure which are reproduced on the hardcover jacket of Richler's later novel St. Urbain's Horseman. The book shows a lot of creativity and ability by Richler to remove self imposed limits on his writing - a problem that many writers have - and he writes in a very liberated fashion in the present book, far more so than some of his later works. This novel is by Richler during his British phase and it has a lot of sexual obsessions in it. The book title refers to a male's anatomy.

As a point of reference, I have read all of Richler's major works and a few of his early novellas.

Modecai Richler (1931 to 2001) grew up in Montreal and that city is the setting for many of his stories - but not all. Many of his novels are about Jews living in Canada and Britain post WWII.

He is best known for his tales of life in and around St. Urbain Street. That is an area of three story buildings or walk up row houses located just east of the mountain in Montreal, and north of the commercial center of the city. At one time this was the center of Jewish immigrant life. Many Jews coming to Montreal started there but then moved on to Outrement, Hamstead, and other districts. His father was a scrap dealer and he graduated from a heavily Jewsih high school, Baron Byng High School, which has other famous alumni including William Shatner of Star Trek fame. Some of the local establishments such as Schwartz's Deli on St. Laurent are still in business. He uses much of those biographical experiences in the book.

His break out novel is the present novel Duddy Kravitz which is still a great read whether you have seen the movie or not. Also, I like his last book, Barney's Vision, which is probably his most balanced and best written piece of work. That novel lacks the edge and drama of Duddy Kravitz. Along the way, he experimented with different themes and the use of sex in the plots, and usually he did that with a lot of humor.

For the present novel, the plot or story is a bit weird and convoluted and has included a bit of the big brother touch. It is about a British based editor, his sex life, and his interaction with a controlling boss and other people. The book takes many twists and turns and has numerous provocative sexual passages.

Many of his critics claim that he re-cycles his characters and deals only with one topic, but in general his books are far from the predictable and this book is an example.

This is an unusual read. 5 stars for creativity.

A great satire for those similarly warped minds. Well, maybe it wasn't satire as much as a prediction from the '60s. Shipping time was reasonable.

Great artwork and improved paper but the UK version is still slightly better for my use

The book in the video and in the photos are only of the US version of this book except photos where I show both books. In those cases, the UK version is at the top and the US version is at the bottom.

I purchased both the UK and the US version of this book. I reviewed the UK version on Amazon on April 23rd of this year. As I noted at that time, I really enjoy Kerby Rosanes artwork which includes an unusual look at design and I have a really fun time coloring all the little odds and ends that make up the full design. I found that I actually liked Imagimorphia even more than Animorphia – which was difficult to do as I so enjoyed his first book in this series. It still has a good number of animals in it but it expands beyond them into other design concepts as well.

So, the designs are great, as expected, but what about the publishing quality of the US published book? The UK version was published in exactly the same fashion as the UK version of Animorphia. I was dreading that might be the case with the US version as well. What actually arrived was a coloring book printed on a much heavier weight of paper than the US Animorphia book. It actually weighs slightly more than the UK version – either a slightly heavier paper or the slightly larger size of book – or a combination of both of these. The US version weighs in at 1.07 lbs. and the UK version weighs in at 1.03 lbs. The US version measures at 10 x 10 x 3/8 inches and the UK version is 9 7/8 x 9 7/8 x 3/8 inches.

That is good and a great improvement since the last book but there are some more subtle differences in the publishing that still makes me prefer the UK version. If I didn't have access to the UK version, I would have been okay with the US one but I still would have been a little bit unhappy with a couple of issues. The two most important of these are the binding and the texture of the paper.

The UK version has a sewn binding and the US is glue bound. The UK version has the design right into the binding and the US has a white strip (when you can get the book to fully open which is impossible for me on some of the pages.) Where this is most evident and least desirable is on two-page spread designs. Right in the middle of the design is a quarter inch strip of nothingness. I have no problem getting the pages to open on the UK version because they are sewn rather than glued. I did have to break the spine with a heavy crease, but I was able to get at all of the design without at white strip.

The texture of the paper is important for me as I use colored pencils for my work (due to the double-sided printing and the leak-through of markers.) The US version of the book is very smooth – almost slick. The UK version of the book has a slightly smooth but with enough tooth for colored pencils. My pencils had more of a “smeary” type of look with the US version.

Other small differences include color of paper and print. The UK is brighter white with darker print. The US is softer white with slightly lighter print. The covers are different in texture and color. The UK is matte black with glossy highlights on the designs and title. The US is a softer matte and there are no glossy highlights.

The designs are all the same though there is a slight switch up of pages in the title and bookplate pages between the two versions.

Here is what I experienced while coloring in this book and testing my various coloring medium.

Most water-based markers bleed through spotty (exception was the brush end of my Tombows which did not bleed through)

India ink pens left shadows on the back of the page.

Gel pens did not leak through the paper.

Coloring pencils do not do as well with this paper. The paper is extremely smooth and did not provide good tooth (or grip) for the color to adhere evenly. Both my wax and oil-based pencils provided a kind of smeary uneven color.

Beautifully Detailed...

"Imagimorphia" contains 77 full size coloring pages, 3 pages of "draw-your-own", 5 pages of introductory material, 3 pages of hidden objects, and an 8 page index in the back. It measures 10 inches square and is glue bound into a colorable, matte finish cover. Featuring a variety of intricate black and white line drawn images, this book is appropriate for adult colorists on all skill levels.

Paper:
The paper in this book is bright white and fairly heavy(think scrapbooking weight). All pages are double sided and non-perforated. Dry mediums/gel pens should be okay to use, but most markers will bleed through. As always, be sure to place several sheets of blotter paper under your current picture to prevent any color transfer or pencil indentations.

Artwork:
As with the author's other book, "Imagimorphia" focuses on intricate, fantasy inspired artwork. Inside you'll see animals, birds, insects, steampunk themes, skulls, ships, fish, and more. There are approx. 24 double page spreads that do merge into the binding. Most of them are lined up well, but there were a few that were very crooked. The rest of the images are contained to a single page and end before reaching the edges. Print quality is very high and the detail level is consistent throughout. Picture completion time should range from 6-15 hours(may be slightly different for each individual). Overall, this is a nicely done book that doesn't disappoint. It would be best suited for chalk/pencil colorists who enjoy coloring extremely detailed imagery.

This is one of my fav books! I have tons of fun with it! The book itself is very soft and easy to bend open to color the cross pages. I have no trouble using any kinds of coloring pencils! the design is so incredible, so much energy and so many little hidden creatures for you to discover! It's a book for all age and all gender!

Robert Levy views Bhaktapur as a structured "mesocosm," mediating between the microcosm of individual self-conception and the macrocosm of the culturally conceived larger universe. The city is a bounded entity, grounded on a minutely divided and interrelated sacrilized space. It uses that space, roles assigned by an elaborate caste system, a semantically differentiated pantheon, and the tempos and forms of the festival year and rites of passage to construct a "civic dance," a web of communication and instruction which deeply affects the experience of Bhaktapur's citizens. Levy investigates the meaning of the community to the people who live there and suggests how the religious forms that have challenged Hinduism in South Asia—Christianity and, above all, Islam—are profoundly antithetical to Hinduism as the organizing principle for cities such as Bhaktapur. Mesocosm is a groundbreaking contribution to anthropology, social and religious history, and Indian and Nepalese studies.

Hank Runs a Bluff (From Hank the Cowdog #1: The Original Adventures of Hank the Cowdog) Hank has been accused of murder! In a fit of despair, Hank resigns his position as Head of Ranch Security and decides to join the outlaw coyotes on the open range. There he's known as Hunk (that's Hank in coyote language). Hank meets Missy Coyote, sister to Scraunch -- the meanest, roughest, toughest, most notorious coyote in the whole country. If Scraunch found Hank with his sister... well, look out for trouble.

"How can a nice girl like you have such a bad brother?" said Hank.

Missy shook her head. "Hunk be careful. Not safe here."

"I ain't scared. Hank ready to fight whole family for Missy."

"Hunk in trouble. Whole family here."

I looked around. She wasn't kidding. The whole danged family had arrived. We was surrounded by lean-limbed, long-haired, scruffy-tailed, yellow-eyed, hungry-looking coyotes.

One of the first rules you learn in security work is never bite if you can bark; never bark if you can growl; never growl if you can talk; never talk if you can run.

In other words, when the odds are against you, the best kind of fight is none at all. That was my strategy, see. The longer I talked, the longer I could stay alive. And who knows, I just might say something that would change Scraunch's mind about tearing me limb from limb.

A hush had fallen over the tribe and all eyes were on the two of us. He sat down and leered at me.

I leered right back, tried to anyway, though I'd never really perfected a good leer.

"All right," I nodded, "you asked for it, you've really done it this time. Come on! Get off your duff and let's settle this thing once and for all. I'm tired of waiting. I mean, I came out here to get you, Scraunch. Oh, I know you thought I was messing around with your sister. Ha! That's just what I wanted you to think. It was a trap, Scraunch, and you walked right into it.

Missy glanced at me, and I gave her a smile and a wink.

Scraunch cut his eyes toward old Gut.

"Scraunch kill chicken dog."

I marched right up to him until there weren't more than a couple of inches between our noses.

"If you're determined to go through with this, let's get it on. But first, I want you to ask yourself this question: Why would a smart dog walk right into the middle of a bunch of coyotes? If you figger it out, you'll know the secret."

Nobody moved. There wasn't a sound, not a whisper. I was in the process of checking out the escape routes when an old woman coyote (Scraunch's mother) broke the circle and came out to him. She whispered something in his ear.

"No!" he growled. "Scraunch not scared, kill chicken dog!"

The old lady went to whispering again, then old Chief Gut limped over and joined the conference. They growled and snapped and snarled -- typical coyote family discussion, I would imagine.

"All right," I yelled, "time's up. Have you figgered out the secret or shall we start spilling blood?"

The old lady led Scraunch away. He glared daggers at me over his shoulder. Old Chief Gut came over and stood in front of me.

"Not fight today."

"Rats," I said, and almost fainted with relief. "All right, if that's the way you want it. We'll let it slide this time but I'm warning you, don't ever let this happen again."

"Not happen again."

"Very good. Now, if you coyotes will just stay where you are, I'll slip out of here and get on my way."

"Hunk not understand."

Missy came over.

"Hunk stay, become coyote warrior, prove himself many fight and marry Missy Coyote."

"HUH?"

"Make warrior? Well, I...I've always wanted...but I really have to..."

I tried to ease around the three coyotes who were blocking my path. When I moved, they moved. They didn't intend to let me out of there, is the way it looked.

About the Author

Michael Chazan is an associate professor in the Department of Anthropology at the University of Toronto.

He earned his Ph.D. in anthropology at Yale University.

Before coming to Toronto, Dr. Chazan was a postdoctoral fellow with the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique in Paris and at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem.

Among his field experience are excavations in New Jersey, France, Israel, Jordan, Egypt, and South Africa.

Dr. Chazan's publications include a monograph on the Lower Paleolithic site of Holon, Israel, coauthored with Liora Horwitz.

Dr. Chazan is currently engaged in a project on the Earlier Stone Age of South Africa:
