I personally enjoyed this book considerably. The Japanese references, the boy's obsession with hats, and his own personal living arrangement made the story rather engaging. However, I will say that I wanted to knock the protagonist upside the head from time to time, but overall, it was a decent piece.

I simply fell in love with this book, after being introduced to this author on Instagram. The words that this author brings to paper, are the ones that normal people (like me and you) are unable to put into words even though we may be feeling and thinking about them. Reading this book made me feel like I had come home; that I had been given the privilege to meet with a like-minded mind, who really GETS you.
This book is brilliant.

Najwa just has a way with her words that articulates my inner feelings. The positivity and her outlook on many situations found in this book is enlightening and peaceful. It gives me a perspective of self confidence, self respect and that taking the higher road by doing the right thing can only do you good. Great catalog

I bought his book for my husband, who collects antique military firearms. Being 26, he's very computer savvy and looks everything up on the Internet. The man loves his CMP forums. I got this as a filler gift for Valentines day and didn't really expect him to use it too much. He actually finds it very useful. His father is always traveling and buying guns and needs quick reference checks, serial # identification and price quotes and with this book my husband is able to look everything up and give accurate info over the phone. The book is really detailed with gun specifications and country information. It is full of information that is readily available on the Internet, but the book is really handy because it is all right there and, so far, accurate.

About the Author
John Wooden was a high school and college coach for forty years. During that time, his teams won more than 80 percent of their games. From 1948 to 1975, his UCLA Bruins teams claimed 10 NCAA national championships, including seven in a row, and at one time won 88 consecutive games. Wooden is in the Basketball Hall of Fame, both as a player and a coach. He originated the Pyramid of Success and was the coauthor with Jay Carty of the bestseller Coach Wooden One-on-One. Coach and his wife, Nellie, were married 53 years when she passed away in 1985. Coach lived to be 99 years of age, passing away on June 4, 2010.

JAY CARTY has played for the Los Angeles Lakers, coached basketball at his alma mater, Oregon State, and been a part of John Wooden's UCLA coaching staff. After hanging up his basketball shoes, Carty entered ministry. He has been a traveling preacher and the author of many books, including Playing with Fire, and the coauthor of Coach Wooden One-on-One and Darrell Waltrip One-on-One. Jay and his wife, Mary, live in California.

Wonderful Advice, but not as Visionary or Devotional as I Hoped it Would Be

Coach John Wooden was legendary for his success in coaching UCLA basketball teams which won 7 consecutive NCAA titles and a total of 10, as well as winning 88 straight games. But people off the court have also recognized him as a great teacher.

His "Pyramid for Success" is a widely used motivational, self-help method/book, and it is filled with useful life information. His definition of success, for example, is very useful for those distracted by more worldly and more selfish measures of success. For Wooden, success is "a peace of mind that is the direct result of self-satisfaction in knowing you did your best to become the best that you are capable of becoming." Anyone who reads this book will not fail to come away with some important lessons in life.

I also like the way that Jay Carty has taken Wooden's principles and then applied them to the life of Christians from the Bible: what a wonderful enhancement to Wooden's work!

I do, however, have 2 criticisms of the book. First, I'm not convinced that all of the 15 "building blocks" and 10 "mortar qualities" necessarily build on each other the way the book implies. They seem more like disjointed points which, though excellent, don't add up to a coherent vision to understand and live life. My second criticism is that by building a devotional book on top of Wooden's pyramid, one comes away sometimes with the idea that one is building up oneself in terms of faith or salvation. Wooden's advice is based on human experience and endeavor and doesn't begin with the gospel of grace. For this reason, the devotional part of the book, while very useful in some ways, is insufficient and even misleading.

Great read couldn't put it down

Coach Wooden is the ultimate principle architect. His blueprint for life was developed and refined over a life time. He laid a solid foundation of principles that will support all the other principles. The foundation principles are values that if implemented will set the example and attract others to follow your leadership. The second level are principles of self discipline that when demonstrated consistently show others you are a person who is in control of theirself. The third level are principles of both ability and camaraderie that draw individuals into a close knit team. The fourth level are the keys to the cap stone of competitive greatness. These two building blocks are crucial to individual success and when cultivated are displayed outwardly as sure sign of success. Like any great architect Coach included the mortar that is a necessity to hold the principles together. These mortar principles hold the block principles together because they incorporate deep inner seated values that intertwine and cause the block principles to withstand the test of time.

The author coached under Wooden and therefore knew the man and the foundation of his pyramid. Christian faith aside, this book would benefit anyone seeking to live a better, more successful life. The fundamental principles are timeless, unlike the shifting values of our popular culture.
