Unique in its coverage, Urban Economics and Real Estate allows an instructor to teach separate courses in either urban economics or urban real estate, or a blend of the two topics. The portion on urban economics focuses on urban/surburban growth--physical as well as job growth. The interplay of federal government and local authorities is discussed, and the effects of social problems, such as crime, poverty, and education that often accompany these changes are discussed. While the latest data sets available are utilized, the text emphasis is on economic analysis. The real estate chapters emphasize housing markets, appraisal, business investments, and their relationship to finance. Given the rapidly changing empirical side of urban demography, the text is accompanied by a website with new examples added annually and various discussions/tips about the latest data sets that become available.

About the Author
John F. McDonald is currently at Roosevelt University, Chicago, as the Gerald W. Fogelson Distinguished Chair in R.E. John McDonald was Emeritus Professor of Economics and Finance at the University of Illinois at Chicago. He holds a Ph.D. in Economics from Yale University. At UIC he has served as Professor of Economics and Finance, Founding Director of the Center for Urban Real Estate, Senior Associate Dean for Academic Affairs and Research, and Interim Dean of the College of Business Administration. Other positions held include Research Director at NCI Research, and Adjunct Professor of Economics in the Graduate School of Business, University of Chicago. Well known for his research in urban economics and real estate, he is listed in Who's Who in Economics and is author of seven books. He currently serves as editor of the Journal of Real Estate Literature.

Daniel P. McMillen is a professor of economics at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He has held an appointment at IGPA since 2002. His research interests are urban economics, real estate, and applied econometrics. He is editor of the journal Regional and Urban Economics, and has served on the editorial boards of five other journals. In 1998 and 1999 he served as the chair of the Department of Economics at Tulane University. In 1998, he was a research fellow for the Center for Urban Real Estate and Land Economics at the University of British Columbia. He received his Ph.D. from Northwestern University in 1987.

Great approachable book for undergraduate teaching

Nice book for undergraduate teaching. Full of intuitions and examples. The part on the monocentric model and gradients, the structure of cities is particularly interesting.

I believe this is a very nice book. I haven't found or read any others like this, except for the book Economic Geography I beleive, which is the one from Princeton University Press with the brigde on the cover. I have only gone through the first several chapters of that one, and it is almost totally theoretical and mathematical and goes over proofs and developing mathematical models like you would see in a calculus course. This book is actually readable like a book, not just developing mathematical models to simulate the economic principles. This book requires algebra with a only little bit of calculus I beleive.
This book is very good and explains the familiar topics in this field such as trade offs in distance, estimating population growth etc, but I have only gone through the first 3 chapters so far, so haven't really begun. I have skimmed through though and I would definately recommend it for budding real estate pros, and investors like me. Plus, it has homework problems at the end of the chapters so you can learn the material.

About the Author
Steve is the founder of Portigal Consulting. In the past 15 years he's interviewed families eating breakfast, rock musicians, home-automation enthusiasts, credit-default swap traders, and radiologists. His work has informed the development of music gear, wine packaging, medical information systems, corporate intranets, videoconferencing systems, and iPod accessories. He's an accomplished presenter who speaks about culture, innovation, and design at companies such as eBay, Adobe, Nokia, Hewlett-Packard, and Dolby Laboratories.

Steve has lectured at Stanford University, Institute of Design, California College of Art, and UC Berkeley, and writes regularly on topics from interaction design to pop culture for Interactions, Core77, Ambidextrous, and Johnny Holland. He has a graduate degree in human-computer interaction from the University of Guelph and is an avid photographer who has a Museum of Foreign Groceries in his home.

Design Research & UX Essential Read

I have followed Steve Portigal through his articles and ever insightful blog for many years and have used many of his approaches and methods in my own design research. So, when I heard Steve was writing a book on the art and craft of design research, I immediately ordered a copy. After reading "Interviewing Users" I wanted to share my impressions and thoughts.

First off, the book was really insightful and inspiring from beginning to end. I found that Steve was able to capture the essence of many techniques and methodologies at expert level depth, while still delivering novice level understanding. As an experienced design researcher, this allowed me to easily grasp new ideas and learn extremely nuanced elements about common practices I was already familiar with. The use of case studies and stories from the field, quickly and vividly illustrate these points.

At many points in the book, I found myself stopping to think about and integrate new ideas into my own practice. This not only helped reveal gaps in my process, but also new ways to improve and expand on existing methods and techniques.

On frist read the book provided tremendous value, but I can also tell that I will be flipping through its pages again. The book is a tremendous reference point and will be very useful for studying up prior to my next user interview or design analysis session.

It's a quick read, at only 158 pages, but still dense enough to warrant careful reading. I would recommend it to anyone starting out in the field of user experience design, especially students or industry first timers. I would have been miles ahead If I had read this book when I first got into design research, but better late than never.

My one complaint is the brevity of the research analysis and synthesis section, but Steve even points out that these two subjects warrant their own books. However, after tweeting Steve for more info on these domains, he steered me to John Kolko's book, "Exposing the Magic of Design: A Practitioner's Guide to the Methods and Theory of Synthesis". The book was already on my wish list, so it will be interesting to see how the two dovetail together. He also suggested watching his presentation "We've done all this research, now what?", which does a good job at exploring some elements of analysis and synthesis in more detail.

Truly Captures The Nuances Of Ethnographic Interviews

Having been an ethnographer (design researcher) in the past, I'm extremely impressed with how well this book captures the actual skills and issues involved with conducting interviews. There are plenty of books out there about various research methods (and this book touches on some of those), but they typically miss one critical element that this book nails -- how to actually engage with the participant.

The author does a fantastic job outlining the subtle nuances of preparing for, executing, and evaluating user interviews. He really gets at the details that emerge with participants and how to deal with them in even the most bizarre scenarios -- and those scenarios WILL happen. The real power in this book is how the author captures the direct interaction with an interview participant, and how to get the responses you need as an interviewer, while not coming across as invasive. I also like how he describes letting the participant wander off the interview guide for a bit to learn things the interviewer never would have discovered otherwise. It's dealing with this "go-with-the-flow" approach that this book excels at teaching -- clearly derived from the author's many years of experience.

These are skills that rarely are taught in classes or in methods books. A good ethnographer/design researcher possesses a unique skill at enticing participants to reveal information about themselves without asking leading questions (something the majority of focus group moderators can't do). The author does the best job I've seen at capturing these capabilities and structuring the book in a manner that teaches the reader how they can do it as well. I also appreciate the focus on in-situ interviews (at the user's home, place of work, etc.) as this yields far more value than a group of people sitting in a focus group facility. It's the context that matters, and the author does a great job of teaching the reader how to perform quality interviews in these settings.

I'd recommend this book for anyone that needs to perform any type of research, and it's excellent material for people just entering the field or those who have been conducting this type of research for many years.

Rich in experiential knowledge

Steve's guide offers a vivid and rich description of the entire interviewing process. You won't find academic models here, only knowledge from deep experience.

Here are some of my favourites:

On recruiting is data: "In one project, that fact that I couldn't find anyone with a luxurious yet functional 'smart home' implementation revealed a great deal about how the client was conceiving of the market."
On reaching the tipping point: "Although I can't predict when it will happen there's a point when the participant shifts from giving short answers to giving stories...you realize that you've arrived a higher level of rapport and the tenor of the exchange is different."

Here are two tips from me on reading the book:

Go slow with it: the book has deep stuff you might miss if you flip through too quickly.
Follow the footnotes: They take you to a wealth of information on external sites.

Applying Traction to small consulting business

I read Traction in April 2010 and started applying it to my consulting business. We are an information technology consulting firm, with 10 consultants (including me) working on around 5 projects at any given time. Applying the EOS has brought about a big change in the way I approach my business. Our situation is typical of other consulting firms: 99% of the energy in the firm is spent on serving our clients, so not much attention is paid to "working on the business."

Rather than write a review of the book, I think some readers might benefit from seeing the practical application of the EOS model described in the book:

I did the Organizational Checkup candidly and scored 53%. Here's the status of the other areas:
1. Vision: Complete. Has been reviewed and updated with the input of the team. The V/TO is a very useful tool.

2. People: In progress. The Get It / Want It / Capacity assessment has been completed (with the team). The right person/right seat is a challenge because currently one person is occupying most of the seats. The book has given us the framework for right person/right seat and we are determining how to apply it without asking our team to overcommit themselves.

3. Data: We've created our initial scorecard, and we jointly reviewed it in May and June. The next monthly review is in mid-July, and we will be adding more metrics. More info here on my blog post: [...]

4. Issues: We had an external consultant spend time with us in June to observe our operations and provide us a candid assessment. As a result, we've got a list of issues and recommendations. The implementation of the major items is not yet certain. We have to face the choice between focusing on client work versus working on the business. Some of the issues won't be addressed until I remove myself substantially from client work and act like a CEO.

5. Processes: We were already fairly strong in the processes that affect our clients (project delivery, proposals, estimating, recruiting etc.). Some of our internal processes are being improved as a result of having worked on the scorecard.

6. Traction: We're not there yet (as of early July 2010). We need to make the tough choices (and accompanying investment in the roles) before we can have proper accountability, communication and teamwork for executing our plan and achieving our goals. Our focus remains on doing innovative things for our clients, and I believe that's the right thing to do. It will not be practical to hire a new CEO. So, I will be stepping away from billable roles, and "working on the business instead of in the business."

Overall, I highly recommend this book to any business owner who wants a frank assessment of what's going well and what can be done better. This book is like a mirror. In our case, it is motivational and will help provide a better experience for our team members and clients.

Useful -- if wholly understood and implemented unilaterally

This is essentially a self-help book for business executives. While there are many useful items in here it is ultimately steered towards generating more consulting business for the author and his fellow consultants. Much of the the useful advice listed in here is already understood by most employees at the most basic of companies under different names. Having worked at companies that implemented the processes discussed in this book and the former front runner From Good to Great I have some advice for business executives to ensure success in getting traction:

1. Read the entire book and comprehend.
2. If you use the quote "getting the right people into the right seats on the bus" in meetings with specific people in mind it is you that are in the wrong seat, the bus has no driver, and the wheels rotted away long ago. It may also be a shorter bus than you want.
3. Do not pick and choose sections to implement that fit your agenda.
4. Your "rocks" should not consist of delegating ill-conceived rocks to lower level employees.
5. If there is systemic failures within your company that have gone addressed for any significant duration, they will likely remain in place after implementing the processes in this book. This book exists simply to help you feel better that you "did something", much like any self help book.

This book is very similar to From Good to Great and is in fact referenced in this book. From Good to Great was, in its time was lauded as the self-help book for business leaders. From Good to Great recommended 11 companies business models as the absolute pinnacle of success for everyone to hold in high esteem. These were to be the companies that shifted from being just good enough (level 4) to great (level 5). Three of the companies that were listed are clearly not great: Wells Fargo (TARP bailout), Fannie Mae, and Circuit City. Of the 8 remaining companies only one outperformed the S&P 500 average. Beware of a self help book which references another self help book that demonstrated bad advice.

A business strategy book for the small business owner. One of many that might prove helpful.

I liked it. The book is well organized and does a nice job of expounding on its points. As I read it another book from 2007 came to mind: No Man's Land: What to Do When Your Company Is Too Big to Be Small but Too Small to Be Big. Both books are written for the small business owner who has gotten his company to a certain level, but things are not growing or moving forward. The book has an Intro and nine chapters as follows:

0. Introduction
1. The "Entrepreneurial Operating System"
2. Letting go of the vine
3. The vision component
4. The people component
5. The data component
6. The issues component
7. The process component
8. The traction component
9. Pulling it all together

The book basically is a discussion of a diagram the author calls the Entrepreneurial Operating System (EOS) which consists of six components discussed in chapters three through eight. As I say above, I found the organization of the book to be good. However, I did not find the organization of the EOS to be particularly sound. Not too long ago I read and reviewed Be Bodacious: Put Life in Your Leadership which I thought would have been better written if it had promoted the following leadership system: (1) Dream, (2) Strategize, (3) Take Action, & (4) Persist. The vision component in EOS is comparable to the dream component, and the traction component in EOS is comparable to the take action component. So, in my humble opinion, the EOS is missing two components at a minimum: (2) strategize & (4) persist.

I found the discussions regarding the issues component and the data component to be very well done. I also liked the discussions regarding people and process. However, I was wondering about three more components that seemed relevant to me, but were missing: business models, finance, and marketing. It is so much easier to strategize productively regarding your business if you dissect the business model it uses to exist. Financing considerations are always important when it comes to business, and it is naïve to talk about taking your company to a new level without considering finance in a big way, i.e., devote a chapter and a component to it. Lastly, a business without marketing will probably not last long as a business. So there should have been a chapter and component devoted to it, too.

The author claims in his Introduction that he is putting a new slant on strategic planning for the small business. I agree he certainly has created the EOS which I have never seen in print before. However, the underlying principles discussed in this book have been around for a long time. This book could be tagged as the following: business strategy, project management, problem solving, or leadership. And many books on these subjects have existed prior to 2007. See The Complete Idiot's Guide to Project Management, 3rd Edition, Bare Bones Project Management: What you can't not do, and Scrappy Project Management: The 12 Predictable and Avoidable Pitfalls Every Project Faces.

Nothing new

Ok, let me first say. I have read every book in this series and love the character.Such an original.But I am losing patience with this plot line of bringing people back from the dead. I long for the old days of Pendergast doing what he does best solve murders. Am I ready to give up the series no. But enough of the dysfunctional family drama.

Recycled dreck

It’s like intentionally selecting a five star restaurant to enjoy great Fettuccine Alfredo and they serve you macaroni and cheese. The authors raised the bar with the quality of the older works in the series. And, they apparently got lazy because, instead of relying upon the excellence of one book to sell the next, they have been resorting to tawdry marketing tactic of a principal character dying, disappearing, etc., only to leave the door open for resurrection ad nauseam. If you believed Pendergast died at the end of “Crimson Shore,” you should be coloring books, not reading them.

He isn’t the only one to rise from the dead for this farce as the authors dig up Diogenes to make mischief. Forget, if you will, that the last time we saw him, he was shoved into a volcano. He creates a seduction to marry Constance and fabricates a ludicrous ruse to throw Procter off the trail. Pendergast returns from the dead and, with the help of a compatriot from some black ops group of the past, takes pursuit.

That’s the nub of it without spoilers. If you don’t mind them, continue reading. Diogenes stages a false abduction of Constance that has Procter off and running after it, only to be marooned deep in Africa. There, he is stalked by hungry lions so he does the only logical thing. He goes to sleep.

In the meantime, Diogenes persuades Constance to accompany him to a private island in the Florida Keys where they can live happily ever after. The fact that she killed him (or, supposedly did) upon their previous encounter does not make him at all suspicious when she readily agrees to go. Part of his plan is to update the Arcanum that has preserved her youth. To do that, he requires fresh human body parts. To acquire there, he’s established an identity as a doctor which works well because, of course, no hospital or similar institution ever verifies credentials. Right.

The last we saw Pendergast, he was in a life and death struggle with a superhuman creature that took the combatants into the frigid waters of the Atlantic off New England. Hypothermia would claim a healthy specimen in a matter of minutes, much less an exhausted one. But, not so for him. He bobbed around long enough for a ship full of drug runners to fish him out. They hit upon the brilliant plan of contacting the FBI to demand a ransom. And, of course, the depleted Pendergast dispatched the boatload of armed criminals before that concluded. This reunited him with a compatriot from an old special ops unit with a common goal. Diogenes had killed a member of their clan and it was their sworn oath to avenge him in kind.

They track him down, at the expense of the deaths among those in their strike force, and manage to capture him. He is already devastated because Constance had decided to raise his hopes on the island with an ethereal night of sex and then dump him. Like, she couldn’t have done that back at the Pendergast mansion? Diogenes has killed many people, including their fellow agents, so what do they do? Kill him per their oath? Not a chance. Arrest him for his litany of crimes? Child, please. They simply let him go because he’s a “changed man.” Absolutely ludicrous.

In the end, Constance decides to go off and live with monks because Pendergast won’t agree to a relationship with her. Gee, do you think she and Diogenes might reappear in a later book? Oh yes, and Procter shows up on the doorstep encrusted in dried blood (from the lion attack) and caked with mud, as a result of his misadventure. You are to believe that, in his two-day (give or take) journey home, he didn’t encounter one water faucet.

The bottom line is that, instead of crafting fascinating new characters, the authors simply brought some back from the dead and forced them into an unimaginative plot that was simply a pedestrian extension of the beat-to-death sibling rivalry. It has all the earmarks of something that was done for a paycheck, not the art.

I have read and loved the whole Pendergast series

Spoiler Alert ahead: I have read and loved the whole Pendergast series, with some of the books being great and some that I liked but didn't love. However, each of the previous books either solved a mystery, a murder, or dealt with their own great series (Diogenes). This book did none of the above. As far as the overall progress of the lives and times of Pendergast/Constance/Diogenes goes, this book can be summarized in one sentence: Constance gets mad at Pendergast and decides to go live with her son.

That's it... That's all. After the whole book is said and done, this is the biggest development that occurs in the lives of the three romantics. Oh, and a bunch of innocent people die with no justice and we're expected to just say "Oh, that silly Agent".

Picks up where other books leave off

I have read several Christian marriage books. Most books state the principles that a husband should love his wife and a wife should respect her husband (a mutual balanced relationship). This is the only book I found that told me what to do when you don't have a balanced relationship. What do you do when your husband does not act lovingly toward you even when you know deep down he loves you? What do you do when just loving and being patient are wearing you so thin that you feel on the verge of a breakdown? How do you break the cycle of negative behaviors and create a balanced relationship that is good for both spouses? This book gave me answers and practical suggestions to improve my marriage to a difficult husband. I highly recommend it.

Practical advice and new approach

I was very impressed with the content of Dr. Ito's book, because it offers a loving approach for positive change, and does not get down on men. I will recommend it to my clients and patients as well as to family and friends.

As far as content and advice, this book is tops. I would love forDr. Ito to write one for men (What to do when she won't change) and for other types of relationships (children, teens, coworkers, employers, etc.). This book was informative and gentle in its approach. You will not be disappointed!
